Description Towards the krumholtz forest (that dwarfed by the mountaintop conditions)... and a view towards the highest peak in Vermont, Mt. Mansfield... this photo was shot from Camels Hump on the trail up, just reaching the alpine zone... it was my backyard literally... less than three miles to my door...lol... loved living there! ...Camels Hump is a mountain of many names due to its distinctive Sphinx like profile... once known as Lion Couchant by Champlain... later as Camels Rump which became HUmp... lol... RuMP and HuMP

Native peoples in Vermont called the Camels Hump mountain "Tah-wak-be-dee-ee-wadso" or Saddle Mountain, which i've also seen translated as "the mountain that is like a seat" which might make more sense... Samuel de Champlain's party in the early 1600's called it as i mention above "lion couchant," which is a symbol of a peaceful, crouching lion out of French heraldry and such as would be on coats of arms... Ira Allen's 1798 map labeled it "Camels Rump" ... a beautiful mountain to hike... and it's on the Long Trail (a trails that runs the length of Vermont from Massachusetts to Quebec. Enjoy.
