alright... I have a question. How short was Phoenix's hair before he spiked it up?

Not beyond and average sort of length. It probably could have been a little longer and it would have made spiking it easier.

hmmm. My hair is about halfway between my chin and shoulders. That about right? Or do I have to get it cut again? I was initially going to go for just choppy layers and getting it thinned a bit. Would that work?

That's probably a little on the long side, but you'd get more dramatic spikes. It's just gravity doesn't like Phoenix's hair very much in reality, so the larger the spikes, the more likely they are to sag. The worst that could happen is they dont work, in which case you'd have to get it cut. Just give it a whirl with LOOOOOTS of gel and wax and such.

Ok I'll get a couple centimeters off, and get it layered and stuff, get it thinned, then it should be ok for spiking. I'm having an "amateur pro" (haha contradictions) spike up my hair. She's really good at it (haha explanations) so she'll be able to spike it well enough for me to cosplay.

Haha it's not too difficult to do, the person who did Phoenix's hair here isn't really any sort of person who usually deals with hair, beyond doing our hairstyling for cosplay xD

If I may butt in; don't, by all means, use gel! It adds unnecessary weight to your hair and will most probably make the styling even harder to achieve.
Instead, try to find the Got2b brand products; look for that "Glued Blasting Freeze Spray" thing. It's awesome, and works wonders

My friend Sharon uses a kind of gel, I think it's called Ice or something. it works really well for her so I need to gbet something like that. I've also got this really awesome hairspray that I use when I need to keep hair out of my face. I might use some of that, too.
It also depends on how much you use. IDk, I know next to nothing about hair.
