~Phaeno-otw has made impressive fanart for L.O.V.E.! I really insist you go check it out. It's so good I'd like to base a strip on it!

Haha, I'm sorry! And yeah, that's the subtitle I imagined for the strip: "The strip you wish you didn't relate to." xD

Wow. For some reason, I missed this one. I don't think it showed up on my messages.

I read it because I didn't recognize it, and I'm on my knees.

This is the first of your comics that actually gave me a PHYSICAL reaction. My throat closed up, I was so touched.

All-time favorite.

dA has problems with the notifications. I know a lot of people have missed strips because they were never warned at all .

I never know how to react when I'm told things like that! Should I be proud? Should I feel bad? I have no idea, but somewhere in between perhaps. Or both. Or none.

But I do truly appreciate your telling me, because without that, I would never know.

It's very encouraging to me that my work is something people can connect with (not all people, by far). Thank you!

These strips are at their best (imho) when they are very depressing, yet still seem realistic to the reader. This is a good one.
Although, for me the first and last panels seem both true at the same time. /lol

ForgetfulRainn In reply to Draztak [2009-04-18 19:04:33 +0000 UTC]

I agree. The reason why I make some funny or half funny ones is so that you don't always know what to expect (outside of being funny for funniness's sake, of course). It makes the sad strips sadder, by comparison and contrast, and the funny ones more of a comic relief than they would be without the very sad ones.

That said, there's no doubt that the heart of L.O.V.E. is the sad strips.

Noes! I don't do anything to him! We don't live in the same dimension, I can't reach him at all.

Giga-man In reply to ForgetfulRainn [2009-04-18 15:20:11 +0000 UTC]

How do you know your dimension doesn't affect him?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ForgetfulRainn In reply to Giga-man [2009-04-18 15:24:25 +0000 UTC]

Because I live outside the diegesis, and he doesn't.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Giga-man In reply to ForgetfulRainn [2009-04-18 16:44:34 +0000 UTC]

Therefore it does.

ForgetfulRainn In reply to Giga-man [2009-04-18 19:06:53 +0000 UTC]

Noes! You're asking the glass-maker if this or that curve on the glass happened because he got up from the left side of the bed!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Giga-man In reply to ForgetfulRainn [2009-04-18 20:35:46 +0000 UTC]

If he got up on the right side, he would have fallen down the stairs located on the side of his bed, broken his back, and wouldn't have been able to make the curve on the glass.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ForgetfulRainn In reply to Giga-man [2009-04-18 22:05:43 +0000 UTC]

You don't know that!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Giga-man In reply to ForgetfulRainn [2009-04-18 22:10:29 +0000 UTC]

Exactly! So anything could happen, especially things that could make him not blow the glass. So our dimension does affect others!
In some way.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ForgetfulRainn In reply to Giga-man [2009-04-18 22:16:58 +0000 UTC]

But the glass-maker lives in the same dimension as the glass. I'm not responsible for what happens to Mr. Everyman because I don't live in his dimension. If I did, I'd become an agent in his world, and a character (even as an author), but I am not. I don't belong to his diegesis!!!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Giga-man In reply to ForgetfulRainn [2009-04-18 22:39:35 +0000 UTC]

Yet if you stopped the L.O.V.E. comics (God forbid), his dimension would cease to exist, no?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ForgetfulRainn In reply to Giga-man [2009-04-18 22:44:23 +0000 UTC]

Indeed, it is because I am the creator that I can't be any part of the strip's world itself. That's why I say we're on different dimensions and can't interact.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Giga-man In reply to ForgetfulRainn [2009-04-18 22:48:24 +0000 UTC]

Except for that fact that you're virtually in complete control.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ForgetfulRainn In reply to Giga-man [2009-04-18 23:01:30 +0000 UTC]

I am, hence creator. But me creating this or that event in Mr. Everyman's life doesn't make me exist in his dimension. If I showed up, Mr. Everyman would become just a strip character.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Giga-man In reply to ForgetfulRainn [2009-04-18 23:47:31 +0000 UTC]

Yet, if you created the universe, controlling it, aren't you part of it? It's like saying God doesn't play a part in our universe.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ForgetfulRainn In reply to Giga-man [2009-04-19 09:19:23 +0000 UTC]

That's the difference between God and me: I'm not part of the universe I create, He is. Because what I create is fiction, what He creates is reality.

This is an interesting conversation, and I am aware that what I'm saying isn't usual. In fact, I had never even thought of it that way before I started telling you about it.

What I'm trying to say, I think, is that if I were to be considered as an agent of anything within the universe of the strip (the diegesis), things would fall apart. Just as when the playwright comes upon the stage in the middle of the play, the play is over. (That's paraphrased from CS Lewis - in his example, he says that if God came up on the stage during the play, the play would be over just as soon.)

That's why I'm not being cruel to Mr. Everyman; to be so, I'd have to be part of his world, and I'm not! If I were, I'd feel bad for doing things to him, but I'm not doing anything to him! We live in totally different dimensions, we're not equal. Something like that.

I hope this sheds some light on what I'm trying to say!

Giga-man In reply to ForgetfulRainn [2009-04-19 10:28:28 +0000 UTC]

I see what you say, but it's very hard to try to to know exactly the degree of reality his dimension has without knowing HIM in the first place.

I see what you mean, but God doesn't come here himself and change things. He's a lot more subtle, ya know?

This really is an interesting conversation!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ForgetfulRainn In reply to Giga-man [2009-04-19 10:50:16 +0000 UTC]

I assume God lives in a hyperdimension of sorts, which doesn't exclude Him from ours, just as the 2d drawing doesn't exclude us from bending it into 3d or something.

As to God not coming here Himself and changing things, there's a couple of million people who would argue otherwise . That's what Christ essentially is to most Christians (though not Mormons). And then there's the miracle issue, and a lot of other things. Einstein said that "coincidence is God's way of remaining anonymous", and you're into synchronicity, you can appreciate that one .

The fact that my lungs function is one of God's most important influences in my life. I'd be in a world of trouble without those lungs.

Well, if you think about it, you could send your "son" into Mr. Everyman's world to preach.
