" Now what you want to get clear is that Pride is essentially competitive - is competitive by its very nature - while the other vices are competitive only, so to speak, by accident. Pride gets no pleasure out of having something, only out of having more of it than the next man. We say that people are proud of being rich, or clever, or good-looking, but they are not. They are proud of being richer, or cleverer, or better-looking than others. If everyone else became equally rich, or clever, or good-looking there would be nothing to be proud about. It is the comparison that makes you proud: the pleasure of being above the rest. Once the element of competition has gone, pride has gone. That is why I say that Pride is essentially competitive in a way the other vices are not."

CS Lewis, The Great Sin, from "Mere Christianity",1952.

This is the first of a series on the seven capital sins. The eyes are looking exceendingly to the side because of of the competitive nature of Pride, as Lewis explains above; thus, the face of Pride looks so forcefully to what others have that it almost blinds itself. The irises are made with a new kind of paint I found recently: deep gold. It looks really amazing in its liquid form. I decided to have the eyes made of gold as a symbol for money. Pride has no ears because it doesn't care to hear what others have to say. It looks like a mask because none of the sins are really us, they're just a sorry façade.

brrr!

This one is really creepy but i like the nightmare like quality of it , are you going to make more deadly sins ? Gluttony and lust are cool . is pride the same thing as avarice by the way ?

Isn't avarice greed? I think so. I haven't made any more paintings in that domain, sadly. I sold this painting but was never paid for it : (

>: (

The guy that bought it is a thief then and he will surely go to hell for it (if there is a hell ). Did he ever apologise or explain ? I think you shouldn t be put off by people like that , the idea of painting the seven deadly sins is an awesome one and youve done it really well .

I'm unsure as to how I found your page, but regardless, this piece of art is...actually very scary. Very good, but very scary; pop-artish with the style like someone else said, but...at the same time I get the feeling that in a really dire situation, a person could actually make this expression, grimacing so hard it would create bold, Scream-ish shadows around the mouth and beneath the brow, contrasting with the bone-whites of the teeth and eyes.

The hellish colors and striking eyes, if anything, only enhance this feeling I'm getting.

In short sir, bravo.

Thank you very much!

Longer comments are a rare treasure, so I know to appreciate them when they come!

That painting is based on Nicholson's famous face in The Shining. Heeeere's Johnny!

That painting is currently in Indiana.

Thank you again!

I love the values and colors you put into this piece. There's so much depth and variety -- I know that a varying skin tone is something that many artists struggle with, including myself, but you've done a very impressive job here.

Thank you! This painting looked way better before I varnished it, sadly. The varnish killed most of the subtlety in the tones and made it way more "zone by zone". I had smoothed out the "zones", but the varnish changed everything. I quite regret the change!

I know the feeling. But! That's the curse and the beauty of art -- there is always some uncertainty, always a little serendipity. It makes it exciting, I think.

Still, it looks wonderful. All your pieces have extraordinary values.

Has a kind of 'op Art' edge to it; like with the teeth.
Great combination on colours and shapes.
Good job.

Thank you! It was much more nuanced before I applied the varnish; that varnish ALWAYS turns my paintings into hard-edge artwork. To be honest, I preferred it the original way, it looked less pop-artish, had more shades of colours and light.

Your faces show lots of emotion. I also liked depression, in that sense.

This one is of quite high quality, in my opinion. I like the deep colours and high contrasts that emphasize the topic.

Great quote, and scary.

I have a few CS Lewis books, mostly on Christianity. I love how you're depicting what you think - and your interpretation of the quote is excellent. I hadn't thought of it that way. My immediate sense from the painting is rage and frustration, but that fits too, doesn't it?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ForgetfulRainn In reply to Laurazee [2007-05-07 14:05:28 +0000 UTC]

Yes, originally I wanted to have a face that didn't "look" like Pride exactly. It's like the "real" face of Pride, which is in fact not proud at all, but insecure.

Thank you very much for the comment!
