Description I was torn to NOT post this as a political piece...

The homeless of Corpus Christi, Texas:
More than 90% are white
More than 85% are men over the age of 40
More than 80% are addicted to some form of a drug
More than 65% are disabled
More than 45% are without a high school diploma
All of them are there for a reason that has nothing to do with any one thing

Each year the number of homeless grows larger from city residents who loose their jobs or from people who come to this city from another city.

Corporations and businesses that throw money at this problem in hopes of solving it are doing it in vain. It is a not a money issue here but a social one that has deep roots in racism, classim, and the nature of capitalism. The dark underbelly of any economic system is always there in some form or fashion.

Teaching people to understand their self-worth and that they are a part of the world and not a problem in it is a key to solving this issue.

To me being homeless is a very unfamiliar thing, in Finland things are pretty okay and it is devastating to think that some people live on the streets. But such people exist here, too, especially I guess in biggest cities.

The idea of this picture is very touching, it feels bad to think that some people indeed consider themselves as waste or junk.

As a matter of fact, they did. From my own experience with the homeless, hours spent with them on the city buses and on the streets, it was around 80%.

Interesting. I bought the Big Issue this week and there was an article in about how current schemes and inititives are failing to get people off the streets. I don't know what it's like in the US but the basic problem here is that all of the money goes to getting people into hostels and there isn't enough left to get them into proper housing, give them counselling and help them find jobs. Unfortunately politicians largely ignore it because there's no votes to be won in ending homelessness.

Aaaah, that's really sad. D: And I can relate to it alot because I've been homeless before. (kicked out due to not having enough money to pay rent, due to crappy job that's almost impossible to live off of...*dies*) Annnd...it's not fun, not fun at all... The pose of the homeless dude is perfect, so down trodden. D: The little kids there looking at him add alot to this, because it's just like in Real-life where everyone stares wondering wtf that person's doing there. XD I also like the shading muchly~ And how you left most of the BG empty albeit for the sign and a little detail on the wall. 8D

Really guuuud pic, yeaha~ 8D It's rare that viewing a pic gives me chills... But this did it, and that's enough to make me go "WOZAH! " XD Great job. ^^

The consumer oriented society, and this machine called capitalism, will destroy us all. We're taking more than we need, and sooner or later, we're gonna spend it all, and this planet will become a ball of trash circulating around the Sun...
Our kids, and maybe their kids will have a normal life, and after that I don't even want to imagine...
Millions of tons of toxic waste is our present for the future.

Yes, I tend to agree with you on that. Population seems to be a determining factor on who gets what and how much. The richer are getting richer, but they are also improvising the earth in the process.

so sad
but same problem in each city

here we have a lots of programs to help thems, at least we could try,
but to many still outside without a roof and in winter is still inacceptable.
I try to help them for many years with many associations (foods bank ...)
Each year my postman is gratefull to take the foods I gave thems,
but it's to little for that kind of misery

Good drawing sweety, very good representation view by young children,
look like we still have hope in that dark tunnel

ZIM402 [2006-09-07 03:30:44 +0000 UTC]

it is difficult for me to have compashion for those ppl
my husband when in high school brought like 100 dollar burgers from mcdonalds to a group of houseless men. my husband was with friends and it was a Christian school kinda thingy the class was doing. This was in TN. They also offered to get the men jobs at collaborating companies who wanted to help.

those Houseless men THREW the burgers back at the young boys because "there was onions" or other such unreasonable answer. one man did take the job that was offered, but left after the first paycheck, no 2 weeks notice, just left.

i believe that a lot of these men are there for a reason yes, but i also believe that a lot CHOOSE to be without a home.

EVERY week at one Walgreens location a houseless man comes in, grabs all of the ramen he can carry *in a cart* and walks out the door
the employees are not allowed to touch him cuz "he might have a gun" we can only say "STOP!" *he doesnt stop* The cops cant arrest him because the amount stolen has to be greater than an amount. 1000 ramen = $10 *that was exsagerated, but you see my point.
i will pray for them
thats it
