Description "Well, I need to fill you in on some details first. See, we weren't all just staying on the mansion's grounds all day every day. We were going out into town every once in a while on errands for Doctor Richter. You dad and I were kind of friends at the time but I never had him over at the mansion. I didn't call him every often and I did everything I could to keep him from realizing what was going on. Same with my parents and all our families. They weren't supposed to suspect a thing. None of them were."

"They were clueless," Lindsey said.

"Very clueless," Shannon told her. "We knew how to put on an act, pretend like we were still free women, that everything was normal."

"What did you do out in the town? Were you buying groceries and shit?"

"Sometimes, yeah. I'd go into town with the others and go shopping."

"And no one suspected a thing?"

"Not really. It wasn't unusual to see us out in town, doing our chores. We'd act normal, chat with people, and just be ordinary citizens."

"No one caught on to any of it?"

"Not until Park and I were finished getting some groceries one day and we didn't know it but your father was returning some videos to a rental place. He overheard me talking to Doctor Richter on the phone and calling him 'master.'"

"Did dad try bringing you to the police or something?"

"Nope. He and Casey snuck in when night came, got past the big iron fence and made their way inside. The doctor was in his room, and me and some of the other girls were watching the lights for our evening conditioning. We were totally out of it, sitting in a line and staring at the flashing lights. Our heads were bobbing and our eyes were glassy and the lights were giving us pure bliss."

"Wow, that sounds kind of intense."

"It was. Your dad and Casey found us in the living room and they saw us sitting and staring at the light machines. Your dad says we were like zombies, just repeating affirmations of obedience over and over again. He couldn't snap me out of it, and when Casey tried moving one of us, we acted on our programming to attack intruders. We were told to attack anyone who broke in and disturbed the light machine."

"Wait, you attacked them? All of you?"

"All of us, yeah. I remember it. I was so angry when I saw your dad. He was an intruder in the doctor's house, and he had to be eliminated. It wasn't long before the rest of us jumped up and started hitting and scratching him. One of the other girls managed to bite his leg. It was a mess."

"So, how did he and Casey get away?"

"Casey managed to turn off the light machine," Shannon said. "When the machine shut off, we stopped attacking them. I just remember this horrible pain in my head and then I was...well...me again. I felt cold but I could think for myself. I remembered everything that happened since I set foot in that house. Everything the doctor had done, all the horrible things he had me do.  I was a wreck. I was crying and screaming and your father had to cover my mouth so no one would hear me. But the doctor heard the scuffle and was running into the room, so you dad and Casey pummeled him. After he was on the ground and the rest of us were watching him, Gina called the cops."

Shannon smiled.

"The whole thing took fifteen minutes. Fifteen minutes to end four months of slavery. I didn't fall in love with your dad right then and there, but let me tell ya, it didn't take very long for that to happen. Your father was my hero, and Casey was Lola's. Honestly, I think all of us fell in love with your dad and Casey."

"No way!" Lindsey said, smiling and laughing.

"I ain't kidding. Before Park found her man, she calls me a few weeks later and says if I wasn't gonna make a move on your dad, she was. I laughed and told her she wasn't getting her claws in him. And you know what she says back to me?"

"What?"

"She says that maybe she and I can work out an arrangement."

Lindsey's jaw dropped.

"No.

"Oh yeah. She was thinking what you are. And I gotta say, I wasn't entirely against the idea."

"You can't be serious."

"I'm as serious as a heart attack, Lindsey. I was thinking that we didn't need to fight over him. There was enough man for both of us."

"Holy shit!"

"Yep. I mean, we didn't actually try it but she was alright with the idea and so was I."

"And what about dad?"

"He was...shocked."

"I can imagine," Lindsey said, blushing.

"But I married him in the end. I married my hero and you came along not too long after. That's what I mean when I say that your dad helped me get away from a bad man."

Lindsey leaned back in her chair and looked at the ceiling.

"Damn."

"That's one way of putting it," Shannon said. "The whole thing was a nightmare. After we called the cops, they took Doctor Richter away and then a bunch of doctors showed up to give us a physical. They examined all of us, made sure we were alright. When they were finished, they let us go home."

"What happened to him?"

"What, Richter?"

"Yeah. What happened to the doc? Did they put him in jail?"

"Yep. He's still there so far as I know. They gave him a long sentence. He's not allowed near a computer or the internet, and they're keeping him in the prison hospital."

"That's the least they could do."

"I suppose. Anyway, it was a long, slow process trying to undo the damage. We'd have group therapy, and we'd visit doctors and psychiatrists to work out what had happened and how we could cope with it. Some of the girls had a hard time, but others adjusted quickly. It's a lot better now, and I can say that most of us are fine."

"Most?"

"Most. I don't keep in touch with all of the girls. We've all drifted apart over the years. I haven't talked with Park in quite some time to be honest. Maybe I'll catch up with her later."

"You should, mom. You should."

"Maybe. I'm glad I was able to talk about this with you. You know, it's not easy opening up about this sort of thing. But if you ever need to talk, about anything, I'm here."

"Thanks, mom. I'm...just really sorry. Sorry this all happened to you."

"Don't be," Shannon said. "It's not your fault. It's not my fault. It was the doctor's fault, and the man's gonna be in prison for a long long time. We're fine, Lindsey. Me, your father, you, Casey, all of us. We're fine."

"Yeah. Yeah, we are."
