Description Should have used a reference for those hands...

*Spoiler Alert*

So, I consider Vinyl Scratch to be the second-most heroic character in Rainbow Rocks (after Sunset Shimmer), despite her role being an extended cameo.

For starters, of the entire student body, she is the only one outside the main characters to not get brainwashed by the Dazzlings. Meaning that she gets to remain lucid and aware which all of her friends compete to see who can level up in Jerkass the fastest. And either she knows what's going on (and can't do a thing about it), or, more likely, this has completely come out of left field for her.

The she gets exodumped by Spike, releases the heroes, and at that point she could have walked off, good deed done, This isn't her fight.

Instead she volunteers herself and her sound system (the best around) to help with the fight against the Dazzlings. Putting her right behind the front line.

Battle round one happens. The Rainbooms are beaten down. Vinyl doesn't balk. She doesn't back down. She changes the track, ups the tempo, and gives Sunset Shimmer the lead in to begin round two.

And here's the thing. Vinyl Scratch is an ordinary teenaged girl.

Sunset and Twilight are transformed unicorns. The Rainbooms are magically augmented humans.

Twilight and the Rainbooms had been planning this all week, and could reasonably expect to kick some ass in the fight. Vinyl could augment their magic music, but has no magic of her own with which to fight.

Twilight, Sunset, and the Rainbooms all have a decent amount of resistance to the Dazzlings' magic. Vinyl has nothing.

Let me repeat that, because it's the most important.

VINYL SCRATCH HAS ABSOLUTELY NO DEFENCES AGAINST THE DAZZLINGS' ATTACKS.

She got lucky in the cafeteria and hadn't been in a position to be affected since, but had they gone after her in the final battle, that would be it. Game over for Scratch.

Despite this, she is fully involved in the final battle against the Dazzlings. Even when the Rainbooms' first counterspell is defeated, and it looks like the day is lost, she keeps up the fight. Her entire contribution is in a supporting role, true, but consider the nerves it must take to keep fighting knowing that you are the only member of your team completely exposed to a very powerful enemy, and yet the day would likely be lost without you.

Vinyl: Okay, I finished programming the counter spell harmonies into my sound system. Sunset, the mike's yours! Hit the Dazzlings hard! Oh and if Sonata's still here, she has to invite you to Taco Tuesday with her friends.
Sunset: Got it, Vinyl! Okay, Sunny, time to be a heroine with the power of music! Ready, Team Rainbooms?

People are saying Vinyl is a mute girl.

I believe she's more like Harpo Marx. Consider, there were quite a few Harpo loves horses jokes in their movies. Maybe Vinyl is his granddaughter.

I personally believe that Vinyl jumped at the call to help simply because she didn't get to help the last time. Plus, y'know, she wants to help Sunset be awesome.

"Ladies and gentlemen, your attention please. This is a serious update from the Canterlot School District Superintendent of Schools. Rainbow Dash and her accompanying rock band, the Rainbooms, have permanently destroyed the spell that the Dazzlings have cast on Canterlot High School. Princess Celestia has shut down the final battle between the Dazzlings and the Illusions as a precautionary measure. After further review of video evidence that led to the final round, the ruling that allowed the Illusions to compete in the final round has been overturned. Both the Dazzlings and the Illusions have therefore been disqualified by the school's administration as their actions that they performed have been deemed as severe violations of the competition's rules. The winners of the 2014 Canterlot High School Musical Showcase by default are the Rainbooms!"

- Superintendent of Schools, Lauren Fausticorn

I think her headphones actually protected her from the Dazzlings' spell.

aaand a rewatching of the climax shows that Vinyl did, indeed, have her headphones on during the entirety of the battle. I'm not entirely certain how useful they would have been seeing that she still had to have been able to hear the battle to be of much use, but, point to you, she had a single line of defense.
