This painting came out of several false starts. I was determined to push my own limits and psychological boundaries and work on something that was lighter, flightier, more impressionistic and swishy.

I really, really fought myself about the title. I really couldn't come up with something that describes the painting. Even the current title doesn't quite adequately describe it to my satisfaction.

"The power of your intense fragility" comes from the e.e. cummings poem comes from "somewhere I have never traveled, gladly beyond"...

*********
somewhere i have never travelled, gladly beyond
any experience, your eyes have their silence:
in your most frail gesture are things which enclose me,
or which i cannot touch because they are too near

your slightest look easily will unclose me
though i have closed myself as fingers,
you open always petal by petal myself as Spring opens
(touching skilfully,mysteriously)her first rose

or if your wish be to close me, i and
my life will shut very beautifully ,suddenly,
as when the heart of this flower imagines
the snow carefully everywhere descending;

nothing which we are to perceive in this world equals
the power of your intense fragility:whose texture
compels me with the color of its countries,
rendering death and forever with each breathing

(i do not know what it is about you that closes
and opens;only something in me understands
the voice of your eyes is deeper than all roses)
nobody, not even the rain, has such small hands

******

I created the following animated gif to show you the painting process (I don't know why it's radioactive-colored in this gif...):

You will notice that I went through so many different facial expressions for Draco. I had the tilt of the head and the exposed neck in mind from the beginning, but what is he thinking? How is he reacting to Harry? What is the story behind their relationship? At one point, I had startled!Draco, unsure!Draco, lusty!Draco...and as I was building him up, *this* Draco came through and really dominated all of the other shades of Draco. This Draco is the culmination of every part, and he became real to me.

You will also notice that at one point, I was experimenting with composition...and after repainting and moving the characters around on the page (by the way, something I almost never do, it's sort of a "cheat" to me), I ended up putting Harry and Draco back to exactly where they were before. I experimented with lighting. I changed the background concept completely, going from an abstract pale organic color (Draco/Harry appearing from an abstract organic flesh-colored ether) to something quite impressionably cinematic and photographic. I studied bokeh patterns in film and photography. I looked at countless reference pictures of backlighted photography. I wanted to achieve something very romantic.

You might also notice that at one point, I had a person in the foreground, a ginger-haired female (or long-haired male, I didn't really flesh that part out yet), which I promptly removed. I was still experimenting with the "story" of the piece. I tried putting it in the context of a love triangle, maybe Harry is watching someone else (maybe Ginny?) move away from him, his shoulders and body still pointed at Draco, while Draco looks confidently and longing at Harry. But then I decided that wasn't the story this painting was about. This is about a very complex relationship between Harry and Draco. This is their uncertainty. This is about Harry looking away while Draco imagines. This maybe takes place in the Quidditch locker room, before or after a game, when their ties are eschew and their hair wild. This maybe takes place in a bedroom or in a corner or on the staircase or in a Hogwarts hallway. They are getting dressed or undressed or merely unraveling after a long day at school.

What is the story behind this piece? Perhaps you have your own interpretation. Maybe you have a story or read a story that might fit this scene. I would love to hear about it!

What? How's this possible that no one has commented this yet?

You are a very gifted artist, your style is unique. This is a really beautiful piece and I caught myself watching it again and again. There's so much in this picture, in their eyes, expressions... wow.

Thank you so much! I was sad when this one seemed a bit overlooked. I wanted to paint this kind of beautifully yearning, but complicated, love between Draco and Harry. So thank you for supplying the first comment on this one
