When the camp was consumed by fire, Squirrelflight tried to take her kits outta the way, but Ashfur had another plans. He was still heartbroken for the choice of the orange she-cat in choosing Brambleclaw instead of him to be her mate. So, he stood in the way to stop her kits from scaping. Their ex-clanmate, Fênix, showed up a few minutes later to try and help Squirrelflight, and she did telling the hidden truth: they were not her kits. Using this as a reason to convince Ashfur that he couldn't hurt her killing those kits, Fênix managed to make the blue-gray cat give up and get out the way. Then all of them ran way safe and sound. However, the kits felt betrayed and made exigence of knowing who were their true parents. Squirrelflight didn't say anything, and even if she did, the kits were too upset to forgive her. After all, they left the burning camp, but at what price?
