I ACTUALLY HAVE NO IDEA. I ALWAYS START WITH THE EYES, THEN DRAW THE OUTLINE OF THE HEAD, THEN THE HAIR--AND EVERYTHING ELSE FALLS INTO PLACE.
No, for real though, I spent WAY too much time on Dexter's pose--30+ minutes readjusting his stupid hands and it took even longer for his right leg. I DON'T KNOW WHY, BUT I DREW HIS ARMS ON THE SAME LAYER AS HIS HEAD (big mistake) SO WHENEVER I TRIED ROTATING HIS UPPER-BODY, IT CHANGED HIS POSTURE AND MADE HIM LOOK LIKE HE WAS EITHER EXTREMELY HUNCHED OVER OR AWFULLY LIVELY. LIKE, VERY AWFUL TO THE POINT WHERE HE REMINDED ME OF THOSE CRAZY INSANE PATIENTS THAT JUST ESCAPED FROM THE MENTAL WARD AND CHEERFULLY SKIP DOWN THE STREETS.

I'm mostly a self-taught artist, though I must say that drawing hands have been somewhat easier after being forced into studying the structure of hands and feet for a section of my ART 2 college course. Like, it was ONE assignment where I had to draw five hands and feet each, but I haven't been practicing over and over as much as I should because I just wanted a grade lmao!
But to answer your question more in depth, I use references for them (except for opened hands, which are the easiest to draw and practically anyone can do it without much effort). I can't draw hands that go with dynamic poses from memory; they'll look hideous af, let me tell you that now. Hands are still my weak point, and looking at references has greatly helped, but as I mentioned above, I never sat down at the computer, opened up a blank canvas, and started drawing hands to improve further. So for instance, if I were to draw the Godfather holding a gun, I'd look up images of hands with a finger on the trigger, then use that for my drawing.
