Rough backstory:

Kasai lived outside of Konohagakure most of his life on a farm. Due to its distance from the village, it was often subject to raids from rogue shinobi. Kasai learnt from an early age to defend himself, but was hardly skilled with advanced forms of fighting. At the age of 12, his father died of illness after sustaining a wound while fighting off an intruder. With no means to fully protect his mother and little brother, it was decided they would leave the farm and go to Konoha. There, Kasai and his younger brother trained as shinobi. Kasai exceeded in his fire ninjutsu and adopted a love of fire itself, often experimenting with various techniques and his own chakra. Due to his late start, Kasai was never assigned a team, and as such did his studies independently. He entered the exams with other sole-stragglers and made it through with relative ease. Though he preforms missions under the pretense as a "shinobi" he has little recognition of the title, seeing it only as a means to an end to provide for his family.
