Description

Hey guys!

Here's my latest project I've been working on Pumpkinhead (based on the creature from the Stan Winston film). I plan on using him for the part 2 rigging tutorial video.

I know it's very short... but this is still an early test. I didn't want to waste hours of render time for something that isn't fully finalized. I'd say that texturally and modeling-wise, I'm at the 60% completion-mark. There is still a lot of detailing to be done, particularly in the arms, legs and abdomen region. He is also still lacking a tail.

I wanted to rig what I had so far to get a sense of what the overall character looks and feels like. I just gave him a basic jaw rig, and two facial morphs... Nothing too fancy. The animation is fairly stiff, but I just have it in place to test the overall deformations.

I am definitely pretty happy with the way he's turning out so far! More soon!

- Ralph

Software used:
Pixologic Zbrush 4R6
Autodesk 3ds MAX 2014
Adobe After Effects CS6
Adobe Photoshop CS6

Woah! The Pumpkinhead model looks really nice and detailed. I really do wish there was a download to this model, because I could use this for my project and I possibly would give you credit if you like.

I checked your other stuff and they look great too! I was wondering whenever if you have the time, could you do the goblin general 'Red Cap' from The Spiderwick Chronicles? He's my favorite from that film.

Hi there,

Thanks for the nice words! Unfortunately most of my work (Pumpkinhead included) was work done for clients So I can't just freely distribute things.

Red Cap definitely is super cool, maybe when I have some down time towards the end of the year I'll give him a shot

Hey Victor, thanks man! I already have part 1 up on YouTube. It's specifically for morph target-driven facial rigs. You can watch it here:

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!                  Fucking AWESOME!

I would LOVE to see the rigging tut   (so I'm guessing no Bones Pro or CAT then?   Paul Neale or Joe Gunn influence ? )

LUV it!

Thanks so much! Pumpkinhead's always been a favorite of mine. Actually, I really love all of the Stan Winston studio creatures!

I did actually use CAT for this particular rig, but I definitely still think that there are a lot of useful things people don't know about in the CAT system. But I might do a sub-section in the upcoming tutorial about how to create your own rig from scratch. To be honest, I haven't really messed with Bones Pro yet (especially since CAT has been so great; at least for what I need to get done).

Paul Neale and Joe Gunn are both awesome! They definitely have some great tuts online. Most of my knowledge comes from messing with the software directly, when I get stuck I'll definitely look it up but I kind of like the challenge of discovering how things work on your own. I guess I feel like it makes me understand things better.

Absolutely !

I completely agree, Paul Neale, Joe Gunn, = awesome !!

I've always been a huge fan of CAT (currently I'm following/doing the Fabric Engine Beta).

Bones Pro I like for it's additional skinning tools/options, but it's not a 'must have' (nonetheless Bones Pro gets my ).

I've also really luv'd Kees and his Puppetshop (additional plugins from Lumonix).

And Thank You for the great reply

Awesome! I was looking into the Fabric Engine. How are you liking it so far?

Outstanding, I'm a huge fan of it !

Most certainly keep your eye on it, or get in on it. With your talent and skills, -it would = wow!

Probably the most impressive dev team I've seen within the last two years in CG.

But, a big part of it is, Fabric Engine: Splice.  And Splice is geared towards Maya.

A ton of items that I would luv to see in Max, are instead in Maya.

Philip Taylor (creator of CAT), CTO at Fabric Engine Inc, a brilliant guy, is putting the development work into Maya.

A good (if not now a legendary/famous) thread for some perspective on the current and future development of Max/Maya is;

www.maxunderground.com/archive…

(if you haven't check that thread out, it's worth it.  Not that you have to read the whole thing, it is HUGE.

But it has replies and comments from pretty much all of the greatest 3ds Max minds of all time, it's amazing).

Update ;

Just got some email news that Fabric Engine: Splice will get support for Max ("We are currently working on a deeper integration along with Splice in 3dmax. You can expect to get access to the 3dsmax integration of Splice in the next few months, and the RTR integration will follow shortly after that."  - Phil Taylor   )
