Description This piece was hard.

_____________________________________________________________________________________

Kasper hadn’t competed in cross country for some time, and it had never been his strong point. He grew too excited, too eager, and hence it was impossible to collect him over the jumps where he needed to be paying attention. Where he was lithe and pure in the dressage arena, over the fields he was savage and uncontrollable. But even so, there was no real sign it was going to happen. Like someone bumping a glass of water over the edge of a table, it was only the tiniest of movements turned wrong that led to them falling. Perhaps it was his haste. Perhaps it was the snow. Perhaps it was the distractions of the crowd. Damien would never be able to pin down a reason, but one moment they were rising from the earth to clear a hedgebrush, and the next Kasper was twisting in the air, dragging his hind legs, and collapsing over the other side. Both horse and rider hit the ground hard, and Damien woke up some minutes later, metres from his good boy, covered in a swarm of medics. He looked for short blonde hair.

------------------

Anna didn’t see it happen – she was preoccupied cooling off Autarkhos, whom had come in some what hot from his ride a half hour earlier. The big chestnut was picking at his haynet, hanging from the side of his trailer while Anna rubbed a washer over his hindquarters, pulling the occasional burr from his tail. Then there was a row of noise, a commotion of people, and curious, Anna rounded the trailer in time to hear the commentary over the loudspeaker. “Ambulance to the hedgerow, urgently. Ambulance to the hedgerow, rider and horse down.” It didn’t click that it matched about the time Kasper and Damien would be making. Instead she just felt nervous for that poor horse that might be out there, its fate in jeopardy. If the horse was down, it was a whole other level of serious. Anna scanned the collection of trailers for some poor owner reacting and running to find their rider.

It didn’t occur to her that momentarily, that would be her. “I believe it is competitor 3050... OVEC Kaspersky with rider Damien Crue.”

Anna started running, clutching the brush and the rag still in her fingers, towards where she remembered the hedgerow being. Sure enough, she soon sighted an ambulance, the medics, and a mass of people and a great big brown horse, remaining quite still, with a body a little further on. She ducked under the white tape marking the course, and ran past the hedgerow. She wouldn’t remember until much later, but she noticed the way the ground was all torn up on the other side, and how muddy it was.

She didn’t know whether to go to Kasper or Damien, but as she saw Damien being lifted onto a stretcher to the waiting ambulance, she went to him first. “Damien,” she said, pushing past the medics. He had one of those collars on, the big plastic white ones. “Ma’am, you can’t be here,” said a paramedic, putting a hand in a sanitary glove on her shoulder. “I’m the owner. I’m the girlfriend.” She didn’t realise how strange it sounded at the time, she mumbled it, still staring after the man she’d never once before called her boyfriend. “What’s going on?” she looked up at him. “He was awake earlier, and he can move his legs, but he’s unconscious again now. Would you want to come in the ambulance with him to the hospital?”

At that moment, Emily arrived. “Anna! My god Anna, whats going on!” she said, sobbing as she collapsed against her sister. “Emily, Emily I have to go with him, stay here. I have to go. Damien’s going to the hospital,” Anna started sobbing too, “Stay with Kasper. Don’t let them do anything without my permission.” With that, the paramedic pushed Anna into the ambulance beside Damien and shut the door behind her.

------------------

Her gentleman was lying in the grass, his beautiful coat smeared with mud and water. As she settled beside him, a vet was injecting him with something. Immediately, panic ensnared, “What is that! What are you doing?” she screamed, reaching for him, but someone grabbed her. “I’m just sedating him, he’s frightened, and he can’t move incase he does more damage.” Emily looked to where his fetlock was stretched out, hovering just above the grass. Even in his eventing boots, she could see it had already swollen to twice it’s normal size. As the sedative began to function, his hoof gingerly lowered to rest in the grass. “You won’t take the boot off won’t you? Incase its broken?” she asked as she went to sit by Kasper’s head. His great big eye lingered half way open, and Emily kissed the bone just above it as she tried to stay calm and rational. “No, I won’t do anything until I know what’s happened.”

“My good boy. It’s alright buddy, nothing’s going to happen until Mum gets back. It’s alright. You’ve just had a stumble.” She said, comforting him, but she knew Kasper couldn’t hear her, and that the words of solace were purely to herself. As the crowd waited for the vet to give his verdict, Emily waited to wake up.

While I understand why you did it, I would also like to say that RNGs are completely unnecessary.
