...sorry for the shitty quality - i can't seem to get my camera settings right, any help would be awesome!---

Invest in a tripod. You can mount your camera and set the timer. Make sure you have the tripod weighted down with something so it won't move as some cameras will move from the internal parts. Could have been a great picture. Oh and also use a flash.

Try adjusting the flash. Most digital cameras have a flash that can either be low, medium, or high. Try low or just bring in some extra lights from around the house. Its all trial and error that short of buying a bunch of expensive equipment and bouncing flashes off of umbrellas. I would try the extra lights or just shoot in the daytime with the window open. You can't beat natural light!
