Those are manual gradients, I made them by doing hard shading using the pen tool
and then using a soft eraser set to some 50% or so opacity.
It's not that hard as one might think.

Aha. That makes more sense. Because a computer generated gradient would almost certainly look horrible without some kind of MAGIC happening.
