Description Canon EOS 5D mk1
75-300mm telephoto
composite of 5 images

"This lunar eclipse [fell] on the date of the northern winter solstice. How rare is that? Total lunar eclipses in northern winter are fairly common. There have been three of them in the past ten years alone. A lunar eclipse smack-dab on the date of the solstice, however, is unusual. Geoff Chester of the US Naval Observatory inspected a list of eclipses going back 2000 years. 'Since Year 1, I can only find one previous instance of an eclipse matching the same calendar date as the solstice, and that is 1638 DEC 21,' says Chester. 'Fortunately we won't have to wait 372 years for the next one...that will be on 2094 DEC 21.'"
- NASA.gov

I was pretty bummed yesterday evening when I saw that our forecast for the night of a total lunar eclipse was cloudy. Just as I was heading to bed, I noticed some moonlight filtering in through the window. Moonlight? It was clear! To make a long story short, I got 2 hours of sleep on the night before my first semester exams.
I've seen others do this type of composite image before, so I decided to try my hand at it. Pretty pleased with the result!

Please tell me what you think!

I wanted to do something like this but I missed out since I had to work a 12 hr. shift starting at 10am.. Me with less than 7 hrs. sleep + a long shift dealing with people = a not so happy Lissy. But this is pretty darn cool.

Oh, this is perfect! I caught the end of the eclipse and it looked like the moon was splashed red. Absolutely beautiful, great shots.

How the heck did you manage to get such a good shot with a 75-300mm lens?! I have the same lens and I don't know if I could do that well. lol then again, I'm kind of new to my camera, maybe I'm just doing something wrong. This is amazing!

FramedByNature In reply to KateIndeed [2010-12-25 17:54:29 +0000 UTC]

That's a good question. Definitely not my favorite lens, always seems soft and hardly ever hits the focus. These were manually focused shots (awfully tough when the moon was so dark). I bumped the aperture up to f/8.0. Of course, the shots still turned out a little blurry. The image has been cropped in, and the moons have been sharpened using an unsharp mask

Ahhh, I see. (: Thank you for explaining it to me. What IS your favorite lens?

FramedByNature In reply to KateIndeed [2010-12-25 23:27:35 +0000 UTC]

I love my 50mm f/1.4... but I think my favorite would have to be my Tamron 10-24mm

Ah you had the same situation I had! It was cloudy that night but you could still see some of the moon. As I was watching what I could the coolest thing happened. Wind started blowing and it cleared away a big ring around where the moon was. I was up until 2 am watching the thing and would have watched it longer had I not had a final that day xD

Great photos!

Thank you! A time lapse would have been really interesting if you had a tracking mount, so you could zoom in really close.

Great photos!
