Cretaceous
Velociraptor (Latin for 'swift thief') is a genus of dromaeosaurid theropod dinosaurs that lived during the Campanian, towards the end of the Cretaceous period, about 75 to 71 million years ago, in what is now Asia. recognized a species, V. mongoliensis, whose fossils have been found in Central Asia, in Mongolia, but a second species, V. osmolskae, was named in 2008 from cranial material from Inner Mongolia, in China.
Although smaller than other dromaeosaurids such as Deinonychus and Achillobator, Velociraptor had many similar anatomical features to them. It was a bipedal carnivore, with a long, stiff tail and large sickle-shaped claws on each leg, which probably made it easier for it to kill its prey. Unlike other dromaeosaurids, Velociraptor had a low, elongated skull and a flat, upturned snout. It had long hind legs, which expresses (like the name) its apparent great speed.
Protoceratops ("first horned face") is a genus of proto-ceratopsid ceratopsian dinosaurs, which lived in the late Cretaceous period, approximately 85–71 million years ago, during the Santonian and Campanian), in what is now Asia . Its name comes from Greek proto-|πρωτο- (first), cerat-|κερατ- (horns), and -ops|-ωψ (face). It is part of the Protoceratops Idae, a group made up of the first horned dinosaurs. Unlike later ceratopsians, it lacked well-developed horns and retained some primitive features not seen in later genera. With the size of a sheep, between 1.5 to 2 meters, this herbivore was very abundant in what is now Mongolia.
Protoceratops had a large ruff on its neck, which would have served to protect itself, as an anchor point for its strong jaw muscles, to impress members of its species, or a combination of these functions. Described by Walter Granger and W.K. Gregory in 1923, Protoceratops was initially considered the direct ancestor of the North American ceratopsians. Over time, researchers have recognized two species of Protoceratops, P. andrewsi and P. helleniko rhinus, based in part on their respective sizes.
In the 1920s, Roy Chapman Andrews discovered fossilized eggs in Mongolia that were interpreted as belonging to this dinosaur, but which turned out to be Oviraptor.
