Description
Yes, that's right, the sinister and over the top. Tim Burton and his friend Joel Schumacher had used The Joker, Catwoman, The Penguin, Two-Face, The Riddler, Mr. Freeze, Poison Ivy, Bane, and The Scarecrow in all four films, and they had Jack Nicholson, Michelle Pfeiffer, Danny DeVito, Tommy Lee Jones, Jim Carrey, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Uma Thurman, Jeep Swenson, and Coolio playing them. For The Joker, Sam Hamm had both Willem Dafoe and Ray Liotta were on the list, and Tim wanted to cast Brad Dourif in the role, and Warner Bros. used Robin Williams as bait, but once they had Jack Nicholson signing on to play The Clown Prince of Crime, it was a good thing, and Warren Skaaren, along with Jonathan Gems and Charles McGowan come up with more jokes for The Joker.
Annette Bening was originally cast as Catwoman in Batman Returns, but had to drop out, due to pregnancy, and Sean Young wanted to play the character, and she wore a homemade Catwoman costume at Warner Bros. after the Joan Rivers Show, and security had to take her out of the Warner Bros. backlot, and the role of Catwoman went to Michelle Pfeiffer. And Danny DeVito was the only choice for The Penguin when Daniel Waters wrote the character with his voice in mind, and Wesley Strick came up with an idea of the first born sons of Gotham City.
Tommy Lee Jones was the only choice for Two-Face in Batman Forever when writers Lee and Janet Scott Batchler wrote the character with his voice in mind, and Jones accepted the role, because the character of Two-Face was his son's favorite character. And Joel Schumacher wanted Robin Williams to play The Riddler in the same film with the Batchlers writing it with his comedic delivery, and Akiva Goldsman talked to Robin about The Riddler in his kitchen. Robin read the script and he loved it. Due to a salary dispute, the role went to Jim Carrey.
Arnold Schwarzenegger was the only choice for Mr. Freeze in Batman & Robin. Warner Bros. were begging for Julia Roberts and Sharon Stone to play Poison Ivy, but then, they made a mistake of having Uma Thurman in the role. Coolio did have the Scarecrow role, and Jeep Swenson was the wrong choice for Bane.
As for Harley Quinn, Joel had both Madonna and Courtney Love on the list for the role in Batman Unchained before Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy.
