Hi Frankgo......sorry to be so quiet with comments for so long ...still finding my feet, so to speak..your sketch? no way....Your Portrait, very beautiful, what I like about this is the soft, clear finish of the face and balance of light over the portrait..Your work as always is a pleasure to look at and a bench mark to achieve..So happy to watch your work..Will keep up ........Nev

Good light technique on the hair, I'm not so good in that space.
Well done!

Very nicely done. I like your choice of paper, but I think, given the incredible texture and the potential fuzzy quality that it presents, I would have gone with a softer lead or even charcoal. .. and in saying that, I have absolutely no doubt, too, that the scan stole some of that quality. I'll bet the original is amazing.

I prefer camera than scanner.
Natural lighting is better for photograph your drawing, but avoid too strong direct sunlight, it could reflect on the graphite. Or you can try to put two lamps of hte same kind on the sides of the drawing.
Another suggestion I can give is that you should take a picture at the maximum distance with the maximum of the zoom. It reduce distortion due to the perspective.
I usually take more than one photo, and then I choose the best. Later I can try to make some adjustment of lighting and levels with my camera program.
Also you can find some more information on these tutorials:

Even if your studio will be mini, I'm sure it will be great the same.
I've never tried the two lamps, but I red it somewhere.
Cheers

I'm not sure my experience with my outdated scanner will translate too much help to you, but I can tell you what I do. I set it for at least 200dpi in a color reflective document setting. If your scanner does a preview scan and offers adjustments, I don't try to do too many adjustments in this pre-scan stage. Do it if you have to but try to let it capture alot of gray, it might even look a little dull, but you'll know when it's definitely has the whole image. Just remember, it's easier to darken the picture in a program than to lighten. I think this leaves more room for adjustment in Photoshop. Leave it in color when you get it to Photoshop. ...(and if you're stitching together scanned parts of a larger image, put it together BEFORE you do adjustments.) ..I play with the "levels" then a little "brightness/contrast" in the adjustment layers palette. Just try to keep the values true. It's REAL easy to blow out the details you're trying to preserve.
..I'm sorry. I feel like I'm not helping at all. I wish you luck, you have loads of talent. If nothing else, go with the Photos of your work.
