2nd attempt to comment. Some -adΒ stuck over the submit button and I had no way to remove it.
This painting hangs in Rotterdam. Since I saw it in the 70's, the lower third was destroyed, reduced to bare wood, by a "restoration" and "cleaning". I WISH restorers would either leave paintings alone, or determine whether ANY paint is extant under the overpaint. One fresco, the Death of St.Francis of Assisi, was destroyed by a restorer.
The entire painting below this detail re-rendered, had been destroyed.

That's awesome you saw the real thing. I was curious as to what happened, that's partly why I only chose to do this section of the painting. It breaks my heart that some buffoon ruined part of this in a cleaning attempt. I figured it just got damaged some other way, as it's like 500 years old. Some restorer that was.

Unpredictable what restoration and cleaning might cause.
(1) One painting by Bosch was of Christ being shown to the crowd by the High Priest. The devilish high priest says (in a sort of word balloon with calligraphy)"Behold the Man". theΒ rabble of reprobates reply "Crucify him". A third word balloon pointing from no one says "Save us Jesus". Cleaning revealed 2 standing figures in that empty area. Apparently long effaced donors or patrons who commissioned the painting. The later owners painted over the figures who were strangers to them.
(2) A painting of the Marriage at Cana was long ago cut down in the upper corners, as evident in an early copy made showing what was destroyed. The copy also lacks 2 dogs in the lower left. Somebody objected to the bare floor and so added 2 spaniels. (tho Jews regarded dogs as filthy and their presense would desecrate a synagogue or Temple). Their style is 17th cent. Dutch and not like Bosch. The paint has also become slightly transparent from age and the floor shows faintly through them. Paint going transparent from age is not unknown.
(3) Another Bosch painting of the showing of Christ to the rabble (I saw this in Philadelphia) was but the upper left quadrant of the original panel. Judging by a drawing maybe by Herri met de Bles, the painting originally included the suicide of Judas (with demons mocking the body),Mary being comforted, and ,in the foreground,Christ carrying the Cross as reprobates with weird hats and weapons hustle him on.
In closing, I'd like to say that while panel paintings are extant to various extents, canvas paintings from the 16th and late 15th, are generally in poor condition. One is practically just the outlines (adoration of the magi).

I had no clue about those, that's really fascinating. I'm not surprised paintings that old end up in poor condition, although it's strange to me that people would add figures, paint over sections, or even cut up parts from a painting by a famous painter hundreds of years after. Funny the things people do.

Bosch is a vastly underrated artist. Possibly the most imaginative man to live in the middle ages.

Yeah he was truly a visionary, from when most art was strictly representational of real things or just religious figures, he was really creative and imaginative. He's one of my earliest influence, loved his paintings since when I was young.

Such a chaotic landscape. The colours definitely convey the infernal heat and the figures are hellish in their own right.
