Description After doodling up the komodo dragon skull and face the other day, I decided to work out what the face of a theropod or two might look like. Here's the first of my quick and dirty sketch portraits. Growing up with the enlarged scales adorning bony struts used by Greg Paul and all his imitators, I always used to try to enhance theropod faces with flat scutes, scales, and hornlets around key fenestral outlines. Here, I kept all such adornment to a minimum on purpose. While some bony contours probaby were visible (I used naked headed birds, large lizards, and crocodilians as a reference for this), most are very subtle and not adorned by big scales. Nice, lizardy lip bands are present too to stop unnecessary loss of hydration and to keep the bugs out. Having worked through Alioramus, I might take a stab at some other portraits just to see how they come out. If good (or even if not so good), I'll post them here. Thanks for looking as always!

The eye here is perfect. So much life and abstract emotion while looking VERY realistic. Is the eye also referenced from a Komodo?

Thanks. No special model for the eyes. Just generic reptile/bird model.

Very cool. The "growing up with the enlarged scales adorning bony struts used by Greg Paul and all his imitators" part sounds very familiar to me - thankfully, tyrants do have enough bony cranial ornamentation. I especially like the prominent jugal "horn" and the large scales at the anterior mandible.

Right on. I was going for an amalgam of crocodilian and bird with very minimal lizard. Trickier than I thought as it turns out.

I really love this, the reconstructions next to the skeleton always looks better than just one or the other. I'd love for you to do a few more of these, especially with some hadrosaurs or something like that.

Hey, thanks.

Yeah, I always enjoy seeing the underlying skeletal framework next to a reconstruction. I have plans to do a variety of these so stay tuned!
