Description  AU: Society: Vampire(ish) Cordelia and a younger Lesath

Artist Note:  So mini stories in my head.  I was thinking about how the relationship between Society Cordelia and Lesath would have developed as he grew up.  And this happened.

TLDR:  Cordelia tries to hide her face from Les as it is covered from blood  from a recent hunt. She panics when he sees it, because she doesn't ever want him to see her as a monster.  He instead cleans the blood from her face and reassures her of their bond.

___ ___ ___

Some vampires couldn’t see their reflections, Les had told her.  She thought sparked as she sat down at her vanity.  Cordelia rarely felt bad for any blood sucker, but she couldn’t imagine not having a reflection. Perhaps, it made it easier for them to ignore the monsters they had become.

At least some of them were no more.  Rivulets of dried blood coated the sides of her mouth, down her chin and pooled at her leather collar.  She had been less than refined when she ripped out their throats and drank her fill.  She looked like the monsters she hunted for the Society.  She understood why the more skittish members scuttled out of her sight if this is how she looked after a mission.  Self-pity consumed her for a second, she didn’t want them to see her as the monster she clearly was.

Shaking off the thought, she laughed.  It was none of her business what other people thought of her.   Except for dear Lesath.  Would her sweet little brother pale in fear if he saw her this way?

“You’re back!” Speaking of her promisee, the ten year bound through the door that connected their rooms.  “Do you get them?  Are you hurt?”

“I get them all,” the words muffled as she ducked her head from his line of sight. She had always cleaned before seeking him out after her return.

“Got them all.  You got them all, “He gently corrected her English.  He smiled at her wider, trying to catch her eye.  His smile faded slowly when he realized she was avoiding eye contact, “What’s wrong?  Look at me.”

He hadn’t meant to use the order.  He was so young, but he was already choosing his words to avoid inadvertent orders.  Cordelia had once read a bedtime story to him twelve times before he realized “Again! Again!” was an order.  The contract demanded absolute obedience.

Her hands came up to cover her mouth, but she knew the instant he saw it.  A small ‘O’ shaped his mouth and he darted from the room.  She was a monster.  He thought she was a monster.  Her heart pricked with a pain she’d not expected.  Cordelia sagged at the vanity and searched frantically through the drawers for a cloth and antiseptic.

He skipped back in the room holding a small tub.  His smile reached his eyes and he plopped down on her vanity as if he was the small five-year-old she’d rescued from the tomb.  He was growing so fast, too fast.  Her hands moved to her face to cover the blood, but he batted them down and pulled a wet wipe from the tub.  He touched the wipes to her face to clean the filth away. He chatted idly about how he had been allowed into a new section of the library today and how a hunter was teaching him to carve wooden stakes with protective charms for her.  He tossed each soiledl cloth in the refuse bin and tugged a clean wipe free.  Lesath was at complete and total ease with her bloody state and even laughed when he realized he missed some splatter on her locket that held a picture of him.

“See, all clean!” He moved from the vanity to expose the mirror and she looked on, the order tingling the air.  She smiled, turning her head to check the thoroughness of his work.  He ducked under her elbows and weaved his arms through hers until his head rested under one of her hands. His smile contagious and she smiled even wider when he didn't flinch at her fangs. “Did you know that some vampires can’t see their reflection?  It’s because they don’t have souls.”

But she knew. She heard his unspoken words.  His actions all but shouted them.  You are no monster to me.
