I love Guy Gavriel Kay's books, for those who don't know him he is a Canadian author who helped Tolken's son finish The Silmarilion and another one of his books I think, I don't remember wich. His first solo was a Trilogy inspired by the Lord of the Rings books called : The Fionavar Tapestry. This character is an elemental demon who is supposed to become Lancelot's executioner. If you like medieval polotics, by that I mean Royalty... Religious differences and the wars they can cause and of course monsters and magic then you have to read this guy's books.
