Thanks,
It's really not as much impressive as it looks. It's just more about time and patience ^^
Give it a try, you'll see

Du coup on est en train de précommander le set du 30ieme anniv. On a raté le financement participatif. On est inondé d'informations inutiles, et celle-ci n'étais pas parvenue jusqu'à moi. tsk tsk tsk.

I tried to draw a map like this (It was much bigger) But after the fourth or fifth re-start I ran out of patience. I'm sticking to Dragons I guess.

FredLipari In reply to Guardian-of-Urk [2018-02-22 07:07:55 +0000 UTC]

There's always a benefit trying to do something out of your comfort zone. When patience runs out, dedication takes over
Try perhaps something smaller, then something bigger afteward, and bigger. Always wmooth transitions.
Laelith was done traditionnaly, stacking sheets of paper, for a size as big as about 1,5 meter wide. Did you really try something bigger than that ? If so, I understand how you could have been in despair

Guardian-of-Urk In reply to FredLipari [2018-02-22 14:35:33 +0000 UTC]

I tried to draw a map of a whole planet, on my phone screen, and include all the city buildings. So I tried to draw something like that up there, except microscopic. 4000×4000 pixels is not enough to draw that.
But thanks for the idea, stacking giant sheets of paper. I think that's what I'll need to do to make a map that big.

FredLipari In reply to Guardian-of-Urk [2018-02-22 15:19:55 +0000 UTC]

yep, and a thousand years as well, I guess. Quite time consuming
Unfortunately, I haven't found any way to stop the time. I would certainly have tried it myself
But I promise, whenever I find something that does the trick, I share !

Used to be from a magazine, issued in 1986. A successful crowdfunding managed to get a new version. 400+ pages thick!
Quite a big book!

What a sight! It's amazing to see it like this instead of top down, but man you must have gone hard on yourself drawing all that...!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FredLipari In reply to BATTLEFAIRIES [2018-02-21 18:21:15 +0000 UTC]

You can say that 😏
Quite a challenge but since I’d like to draw more cities like that, I kind of needed to sharpen the technique.
Still not razor sharp though. More is coming... 👍

FredLipari In reply to SirInkman [2018-02-21 16:49:34 +0000 UTC]

I guess you're familiar of this feeling:
- Why in the world did I say YES for that commission ? Time consuming, pushing yourself to the limits, not knowing how to handle it properly. And then, you find a way. You do it, and start to think about doing another one. But then, still stinking from the sweat of the experience, you claim to yourself: Now that I know what Not to do, I'm gonna save half the time, I'll add this and that, and whoever knows what else.
Then the commission arrives and: - Why in the world did I say YES for that commission ?

Am I about right ?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SirInkman In reply to FredLipari [2018-02-21 19:38:40 +0000 UTC]

hahaha, yes!! Indeed
I am doing that right now.
Making a commission much larger and intense than it needed to be and taking way longer than I planned.
But, we do it because it's what we know looks right, feels right to us.
I do hope I one day learn to minimize some things so these commissions don't take so long.

Thanks!
I just need to improve my linework, bringing some colour, add some fun and I'll be really happy.
I think I will definitely avoid isometric in the future, for something more 1-point perspective (like your Travar map)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SteffenBrand In reply to FredLipari [2018-02-21 16:51:24 +0000 UTC]

Your isometric is fine, don't worry. It's maybe because you stared at your map for too long. It always makes me wish I should have done something different. But if you feel like doing another style, do it. I like a lot of things you have done, I'm sure it'll be great

I'm sad to disappoint here btw, but Travar is 3-Point, even though of cause I didn't emphasize two of them.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FredLipari In reply to SteffenBrand [2018-02-21 17:01:10 +0000 UTC]

We'll see how it goes with the other styles

For Travar, as a matter of fact, Yes, I knew it was 3 points perspective (who know why I said 1point? I'm an Idiot). I saw your WIP using sketchup to make sure everything was under control. All in all, it's true that the bottom vanishing point is the most visible. The horizon line is hard to find for me. Sure I'll check that. Good exercice !
I love Sketchup and have started to use it to frame my maps. Actually, the relief/ elevation/ reefs were done in Sketchup. I used it to find the better angle, vantage point. I then tortured the 2D map to make my way toward the isometric view. By hand. Traditionnal. Did I say I was an idiot ? Next time, I'll go for full digital ! Or not (I'm a hard learner ^^)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SteffenBrand In reply to FredLipari [2018-02-22 07:27:11 +0000 UTC]

The Horizon Line in facts isn't in the picture IIRC, it is outside the frame IIRC. As with all my maps I considered using SketchUp, but never actually did. I prefer to sketch by hand and make my perspective grid manually. This way it's easier for me to add something not included in the sketch. In art school I focused on perspective a lot. Just to understand how I do things.
Sure, whatever helps is good to create an original piece. If you distort and it looks good, it's fine. If Sketchup helps you to get the result you need, do it There is no directly wrong way to do things and I want to thank you for sharing your process
