Description Smilodon fatalis reconstruction. A more familiar take and probably the most accurate. Based on South American cats like Jaguars and Margays.

Ocelot-inspired..it almost kind reminds me of my own smilodon drawings with the similar coloration!

I love the jaguar skin pattern, makes her look majestic. Could you imagine if one of these things jumped into a river and dragged a croc out like jaguars do? 😃

Smilodons teeth would snap in a tussle with a crocodile. And their jaw strength is weaker than a Tiger Lion's or Jaguars at 150 psi. Smilodons hunted fleshier prey mainly using their big paws and claws to wrestle their prey. Then sinks their teeth into their neck. Which is covered in thick scale's on Crocodiles.

I love this so much. I am curious tho, what makes this one probably the most accurate, even more than #1. I'm pretty ignorant about smilodon tbh, so I could use a lil learning.

I was wondering about that too.

Well, Smilodon and other saber-toothed cats have been reconstructed with both plain-colored coats and with spotted patterns (which appears to be the ancestral condition for feliforms), both of which are considered possible. Studies of modern cat species have found that species that live in the open tend to have uniform coats while those that live in more vegetated habitats have more markings, with some exceptions (Antón 2013).
Now, Smilodon fatalis inhabited the temperate latitudes of North America, where the mosaic vegetation consisted of woods, shrubs, and grasses in the southwest, and it probably lived in a closed habitat such as forest or bush, the type of habitat in which jaguars and margays live in, so it could have had a similiar coat. Leopards on the other hand have the largest distribution of all wild cats, so their coat is more generalised.

Interesting. Makes me wonder why cougars have plain coats.

Well, they are pretty generalised animals, having the largest range of any wild land animal in the Americas.  Its wide distribution stems from its adaptability to virtually every habitat type; it is found in all forest types, as well as in lowland and mountainous deserts. The cougar prefers habitats that include precipitous canyons, escarpments, rim rocks, and dense brush, but can also live in open areas with little vegetation.

Ah, alright. That makes more sense. I guess I'm just used to that sort of coat being associated with more tropical climates, so I was just a little confused. Thanks m8.

Whoa, beautiful!
Apparently clouded leopards are the closest relatives of sabertooths. If you ever see  their teeth, you'll understand why.

Brutonyx In reply to Ferngirl [2018-12-17 12:39:27 +0000 UTC]

Well yes, but in a very relative way (they are the most basal pantherins, so closer to machairodonts than any other cat), and although some zoologists have suggested that the clouded leopard qualifies as an incipient form of sabertooth because of its long canines, the similiarities between sabertooths and this extant South Asian felid are limited and rather superficial (Antón 2013).

Nice. I always give them tiger-like ruffs around their faces when I draw Smilodon. I feel like it makes them a little-more ferocious-looking.
