I thought it was just Monika XP

Didn't know you played the persona games

I'm just conflating the trend.

Monika is still just... Monika.

And of course, yes. I've played several Shin Megami Tensei games with time (not only Persona).

Oh nice, I'll admit I only played two of the SMT games, and that's Digital devil and Persona . Persona I think is the one I got most invested in.

It's more easy to get invested in Persona than in other SMT games. They're quite popular!

Yeah, however it's kind of unfortunate that I didn't even play the other SMT games

Well, that would entail that you go back to some games with severely primitive mechanics that would probably turn you off. I wouldn't blame you, I was born in the early 80s and there are games that I still can't go back to.

I did play the older SMT games, the first ones. A couple of the portable ones (particularly DemiKids) and finished all the ones on DS and 3DS. I'm actually dying for SMTV on Switch more than I ever did for Persona 5!

Ahhh I see. Even if it might be primitive, I guess I might decide to go back and see what those games are life (well, if I could find them). I probably might try to play the original Persona games for the PS. Although I heard the game can be tough for a certain reason, I can't remember

Oh wow, didn't know a SMT game is coming to the switch, how is the SMT series btw?

simplyNTK In reply to TimidNatured [2017-12-12 19:21:32 +0000 UTC]

The Shin Megami Tensei series is the main one. Anything else (Devil Summoner, Survivor, Digital, Last Bible, Old Testament, Soul Hackers, Demi and Persona) are basically spin-offs with their own continuity.

The main series is pretty cool and as it continues: it polishes a lot of gameplay elements into near perfection. People for some reason hates SMTIV on 3DS (based of the designs of demons, some system changes, DLCs and overall mood of the plot), but both IV and Apocalypse are massively great and challenging games.Β

Just listen to that masterful soundtrack:Β www.youtube.com/watch?v=KHhpFG…

The old ones are tough, are very clunky on their menus (even buying stuff in the store is kind of a chore) and nobody appreciated well the exploration form of mazes until dungeon crawlers started to become more mainstream and elevated into superior forms with Etrian Odyssey. Also, the demon negotiation can be a pain and incur in loses of inventory and cash... but once you start to get the hang of things and create tougher demons: you're suddenly sucked in.

I see. Hmmmm, maybe one day I'll see if I could play the SMT series myself then.

Wait, demon negotiation? So Persona 5 got their negotiation system from another game then?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

simplyNTK In reply to TimidNatured [2017-12-12 21:15:16 +0000 UTC]

Yes indeed. Demon negotiation is the bread and butter to make your party grow since the first Megaten games.

Like I said, Persona is a spin-off (and a very simple one too). You can trace its roots back in "Shin Megami Tensei If..." on the SNES and PSX. Afterwards, comes "Revelations: Persona" which was the first official "Persona" on PSX and then "Innocent Sin" and "Eternal Punishment" (double flavored sequel) and then Persona 3 on PS2.

Persona games heavily deviated the whole concept of being trapped in the eye of the storm during a demon upraising and the aftermath/consequences of it (as the sequels deal with) and instead opted for a lighthearted and school-friendly environmentΒ which panders at being a pretty and independent school-boy/girl with girlfriends/boyfriends, drinking coffee, chilling out at nightclubs, being a cool club-like cliquΓ© at school who hunts demons using demons (edgy) while playing pop music and yeah: the world might end but you still got to study for finals or you may choose to start dancing instead of dying... So yeah... this is why PS4 users are crying over SMTV being released exclusively in Switch. Since Persona became their exclusive franchise: they're on the fence with the serious SMT games.

Ahhh I see. I probably should have expected it to draw so much since it's called Shin Megami Tensei: Persona. I also can see why a lot of people are complaining, console exclusivity is a a pain.

To me the reason why I was so drawn into the Persona series was because this was my first step introduction to psychology concepts and the tarot; those things really fascinate me and the game was the first to spark my interest in them. I liked how they twisted the the aspects of Carl Jung's concept of a Persona and used it as weaponized fighting entities. I also liked the idea of how you use different Personas so you can connect with people better, much like how everybody I'm real life uses a different 'personal' when it comes to certain friends. Aside from the whole saving the world thing too, the daily life is kind of nice as you get to know them, and their problems; which feels better when you can serve as their leg to stand on as they have their own struggles to face. And then to top it off having some memorable music and a likable party (Well depending on your tastes I guess) is what I really liked about 3-5. I know that those games have aspects of power fantasy in it, but my sole reason as to why I love the series was because of the above mentioned things.

Although sometimes I worry that just playing those is not enough... Like I'm some "true fan" because I lack the experiment of playing other games out there.

There are solid top-5 lists out there that you can tackle if you want to get the overall feel of the franchise (including Strange Journey, Avatar Turner, SMT3, Devil Summoner and probably the first Devil Survivor). Like I said, the old ones are kinda hard to get into... I barely finished the first one and shrugged at the second. The third is were things go out of control!

Avatar Turner is awesome (you become the demons, hence the whole "avatar" thing), Devil Summoner is on ancient Japan (like if these things existed since then) and Devil Survivor is a spin-off in both SMT and Persona concepts (as they're kids interacting with modern technology and living fuzzy lives until things go south in their town). Strange Journey is probably my favorite there... is so well scripted, amazing music, classic but tweaked gameplay so it doesn't get on your nerves and the plot is pretty amazing (and terrible for the current humanity there).

SMT has always been about conflict with self... involving even God at a point (reasons why you even end up beating Him several times over some of the games). All the lore underneath is pretty rich and accurate to some chilling degree at times (and also, exaggerated most of the others). Persona came to be more "lite", the tarot and social links made interesting (and friendly) forms of approaching the invoking system and the twist each Persona game has is crazier than the last one!

I personally pick Persona 3 out of the bunch of Persona games. It's lite and stuff, but it isn't as rough on gameplay as the first two and neither is a carefree and colorful as the next two. Persona 3 in the end does have a bigger conflict, it has much more drama, it is still darker than the newer entries (expect many deaths as it never happened before on a Persona game) and the ending is too bittersweet compared to the next two... who are largely more popular, but they're also less and less dark (unlike its roots, SMTIV and Apocalypse really set a more than grim tone for SMTV and this is why people are flipping over what's going to happen next... unlike Persona, they're their own individual games and problems who get solved in the same entry they're in).

Yep, she's also very energetic, tomboyish , and loves Kung fu. However she has trouble touching her feminine side.

If I remember a lot of people like her, however the one true waifu of Persona 4 is said to be Naoto Shirogane
