Description *Losmios was the most deeply effected by me taking down my gallery. She was so struck by my depressed actions that she put into motion "Artists' Alliance". It's not a club or a group... it's a movement. An awareness. AA simply is the ability in every artist to help and support other artists.

I had taken down my gallery out of sorrow and disappointment in the community. "Cool" comments and favs are nice atta-boys, but they aren't feedback that supports an artist. Thoughtful compliments ('cool' elaborated upon) and intelligent critiques are feedback necessary for and artist's growth, and are what make chancing art theft a reasonable risk. Losmios's "Artists' Alliance" movement is created to give artists here on DA (and hopefully elsewhere) the support they need by fellow artists who care.

I was so touched by her sympathy and willingness to start AA moving, that I wanted to give her something in return.

I'm sorry Los that this line work isn't on par with my normal line art. I was trying out a new set of ink pens, and they just aren't detailed enough for my work. I used the finest and medium pens, but even the "fine" was as large as my largest Micron. They make a nice black line... just not thin enough. I did my best to fix it up in Photoshop, but it still "feels" heavy.

I love the pose and anatomy here, the squash of the body is very well drawn. The wings, too, have great anatomy, but the top line of them seems a little 'fuzzy'. Feathers usually lay flat unless caught by a gust, but the fuzziness could be a part of the design, I don't know. The size of them is brilliant. Wings, for me to like them, have to look like they can actually lift the bearer into the air, and these definitely do. I also love the swirl of the mane and tail, it really looks like it's being tossed by the wind. Great work!

Thank you! I tend to stylize wings and draw them "fluffy" along the top line, probably because my brain doesn't compute feathers very well, lol. I feel the same way about the size of wings. If you have a massive creature you better have wings big enough to support it!

WOW. What an incredible knoweledge of equine anatomy you have! This is obviously a pose that would be impossible for a real horse to twist itself into, but you have made it look so incredibly natural Now THAT is something worthy of admiration. n_n I've been creepin' your gallery for the past hour or so but this one really takes the cake for me. Although it's just a simple linework, the indescribable difficulty of pose and complexity of angle make this piece just breathtaking. Gon' give you a watch over on my main account. Can't believe I didn't watch you before!

Thank you very much. I have spent years studying equine anatomy, and now I have the ability to manipulate it in my head, so I can create poses that you would never see a horse make but still looks natural.

I have just discovered your gallery, and when I say discovered I mean it as if i found a treasure! I read your description and depression hits a lot of people, I am so glad that you decided to grace DA with your gallery once again. Your works are incredible and you can just see the love and feelings you have put into each and every one. You are an asset to the art community and I hope I see your work here for a long time to come. This is a beautifully rendered piece. the details, anatomy and movement are incredibly well executed. thank you for sharing your gift and I hope to become as great an artist as you some day! I hope this helps, and is not just an "atta boy". I will most assuredly be watching you!

Eee, lovely gift art. Personally, I like the contorted appearance, it gives a feel of 3 Dimensionality without the need for shadows.

You draw your characters so dynamically! I love the angle and those incredible wings! How do you figure out how to draw horses, for example, from this angle? Do you have a book? Or do you just kind of guess?

Freha In reply to Queen-Kitty [2008-12-12 01:28:37 +0000 UTC]

I have spent sooooo many years drawing horses over and over again, studying their skeletons and muscle structure from every angle, looking at pictures of horses from every angle and weird position, that I have basically memorized their anatomy from head to hoof. I still have my issues here and there, nothing is as perfect as drawing from life/photos, but I can just about pose a horse any way I want to now days. It's kind of like having one of those wooden positionable dudes in my head, except it's a horse, lol.

Reading Los's coment, I see I'm not the only one that noticed the horse teets. hehehe

I like how you play with the way the mane and tail flows on the wind. Also the slender approach to the cannon bones, how they are slender near the knee and hock joints, and thicken as they go down the legs. not only is it true to the horse anatomy, though i see several people make that bone completely straight and it drives me nuts, but it adds a sense of delicate power. If that type of frase makes sense.

what I like is the wings. you can tell that they are clearly bird wings, and feathered, but the shape you have put them in, is like a butterfly.

Freha In reply to SpottedPegasus [2008-11-14 19:55:02 +0000 UTC]

Teats are part of anatomy. If we can draw boobies, then why shouldn't we draw horse teats?

I didn't notice that the wings made a butterfly like shape until you said so, that is really cool and totally unintentional.

fixed in photoshop or not it is awesome! i agree with losmios about your anatomy. the details you put always blow my mind away. i've always wondered if it's some God-given talent or a lot of hard earned skill? or both? ^^

i'm sorry to hear you were upset. personally i don't find DA to be the place to grow anymore. i'm not sure if there is a site to grow with anymore, but ppl like to give fluffy comments. i just give up. my art makes me happy and i know when it has issues.

Freha In reply to RevRuby [2008-11-14 19:52:08 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. I would say it's just a lot of hard earned skill, but my mother insists that is is a bit of God-given talent too. lol

The reason that not getting any feedback really got to me at this time is because of the fact that I am experimenting and really pushing myself to grow at this time. I'm developing a slightly more acceptable style for my Professors as well as trying to grow and improve my own original work. Because of the "new style" my original one (the one that is more me) no longer gets feedback from classmates or professors, so I am totally dependent on the internet feedback for my work. Not getting feedback made me feel like my work wasn't worth the time or the risk of posting.

DA has become more of a blog for drama than an art site, but with a movement by the members who are here for a reason, we can bring back some of the "community" feel. I can see an improvement already with the spread of the AA influence... I'm getting such great feedback now, even though the comments are still few in number, that it is a bit overwhelming. Going from near nothing to bunches of great comments is a bit of a shock, but I'm not complaining! Lol

well i am glad it is helping personally i love all that you do, but i don't have anything constructive to say because i see nothing wrong, nor do i see anything particularly better than the last. i realize i am also not looking for it. either way i look up to you and the work and skills you put into everything you make.

Mmmm...those pens are pretty thick, but they give nice, clear lines. And the wings? DORKGASUM OF JOY. I love it when people make the wings big and broad-they look like they'd be able to properly lift someone instead of just looking pretty.

Those wings are made of awesome - I still feel I haven't mastered the grand art of making feathered wings, you pull it off fantasticly everytime you do it!

I love the twisted neck and the wrinkles in the skin it creates, and the chest like someone mentioned - you have an intuition about anatomy that is very enviable (is that a word? lol)

Wanna now my fav part tho...? The teets! I can't belive you put them in there, it totally ROCKS! YES people, horses have boobs too!

I relaly hope AA starts actching on and make people give that extra minute it takes to relaly giove some proper feedback!! *squishes*

You must have bought a set of Faber-Castel pens. I have come up with my own sizing system for them: M=Monstrous, F=Fat, S=Slightly thinner.

It is still a nice piece of lineart despite the limitations of the media you used.

Freha In reply to lantairvlea [2008-11-02 21:35:38 +0000 UTC]

Thank you.

You forgot B=Behemoth.

They have a nice black line, but are not for "smaller" work... anything smaller than 11 x 14 I'd say.

lantairvlea In reply to Freha [2008-11-03 12:49:26 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome.

Haha, yes! B could also stand for "Broad," but Behemoth sounds good!

Really nice work hun.
Even with your complaint about the pens I think you handled the contorted position WONDERFULLY. Better than I could do, lol.
I think I need to start studying how you do wings, yours always look so nice.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Freha In reply to Ishaway [2008-11-02 21:40:58 +0000 UTC]

Thank you.

My wings are just a stylistic interpretation of real wing anatomy. I studied a variety of bird wings and bird flight for a long time in order to figure them out, and even still I don't have them "figured out". lol The same goes for all my animal anatomy.

places of awesome: chest of horse, stomach area (as it is such a wierd position for a horse to be in, I wouldda had a really hard time getting it to look as good as you did)
Places of improvement: the head looks a wee bit long, tail seems a little thin compared to the fullness of the mane

all in all I give it a *thumbs up* ^_^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Freha In reply to RegineSkrydon [2008-11-02 22:49:54 +0000 UTC]

Thank you.

The mane probably looks fuller because it is going in several directions, but I wouldn't say the tail looks thin. Here is the ref I was going off of for Mia -> [link] Even in her drawing, compared to the craziness of mane, the tail appears to be less full. Chuck it up to optical illusion?

Your lineart is very neat, almost looks like one had done it digitally. I find it very difficult to do lineart personally lol.

But I hate it when the inking pen you use is too big too, especially when say for instance, you've misplaced your good one(s) and have to substitute for a others that aren't nearly as effective, makes one angry lol.

However, despite the new ones you used, the details are still very good, especially the wings. It's nice to see those that really try to make their wings look more natural. They're very difficult to do but you pull it off very nicely ^-^!

Those wings are so sumptuous!
They look so healthily feathered... fantastic job on those ^^
The anatomy is spot on as well... she looks so determined! Brilliant work

I'm sure the new pens will come into their own eventually, I guess its just a matter of getting used to them?

Anyhow... this is gorgeous! So full of life and movement!

Thank you! I love drawing fluffy wings (as if that wasn't obvious, lol)

The pens are good pens, I don't want to give them a bad rap, but they should only be used for large works. My 9 x 12 sketchbook was too small of a format for them.

I'm not happy with how little line detail the new pens I was using were able to make. Any line variation was brought out in Photoshop, but I feel like in the end I was able to save it.
