Description I'm keeping the titles pretty basic ("Portrait 5"), but this one I could call "April 15th". (For my foreign friends, April 15th is tax day in the USA).

This is the last of the B&W fantasy/horror series. As I mentioned somewhere, I started this series with boundaries suggested by my college professor: work on the same size paper, use just black and white paint and work fast. This particular painting came near the end of the fall quarter, I believe. I signed up for independent study for the next quarter with the intention of continuing the seriesβ€”but in color.

One of the interesting things to realize is how we are so wired for seeing faces. This painting has nothing but some black and white smears, yet I'm sure we all immediately see the face. Turn the image over and the face is not so easy to see.

One final comment: this painting uses an interesting dry-brush technique in comparison with other paintings in the series. In places, the black paint is layered on white which is layered on black.

Well, back to taxes...

incredibly creepy and well done! And you're right, it is strange how we see a face when there really isn't one.

The base layer is acrylic, watered down. Acrylic dries fast. On top of that I used the paint straight and heavy with a dry brush. Or at least, that's what I think I didβ€”I painted this over 30 years ago.

This one certainly has a more chaotic and creepy atmosphere than most of your others

I agree. Even among the complete series (including the ones that I will not be posting), there is nothing quite like this one.
