This year my granddaughter, (5 years old) from my side of the family, met her cousin, (15 years old) from my wife's side. She called him over from across the room, "Scooter come over here!". Then sat in his lap and said, "When I grow up I'm going to marry you". That struck my funny bone and I took this picture right after that and have now drawn it in soft pastel on Colourfix paper.Related content

I love the Degas/Monet influence on this one. I'm amazed at how well it works with the portrait-style subject matter. But then again, you never cease to amaze me.

the scene you've captured is a really neat one. knowing the story behind it makes their smiles even sweeter.
the background still feels strange to me, but i think that is because it lacks the shaping and style that you've given the figures. i can't honestly think of a better way to present it, so perhaps it's good that it provides such contrast. the only other critique i have is that the effects of the flash seem very strong on Scooter's face and hand, and beside your granddaughter's skin he looks a bit pale.
anyhow, i hope i'm not going too far with my critiques and you certainly have every right to tell me that those are just the effects you intended. and i would like to point out that i do like it very much in spite of my nitpicking

Julie, I appreciate you nitpicking. Your intentions are always to help me improve and that is of great value to me. I intentionally wanted the background plain to emphasize the two figures more. The complexion of the two are quite opposite, one Germanic and the other Latin. My wife tends to agree with your tastes on the way I did the flesh. She likes a smoother finish to the skin.
