Description

Once upon a lockdown dreary, Freya pondered, weak and weary,
Over many a faint and fruitless Zoom call of meetings galore—
While she nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of someone gently rapping, rapping at her apartment door.
“’Tis the delivery,” she muttered, “tapping at my door—
Only Amazon, nothing more.”

Ah, distinctly she remembered, it was in the bleak December,
When the virus’s ember wrought its ghost upon the shore.
From the daily news, unending sorrow—sorrow for the lost morrow—
For the rare and radiant TP rolls which the grocers stocked no more—
Stocked, she knew, in a forgotten time—stored no more.

And the silken, sad, uncertain rustling of each toilet curtain
Thrilled her—filled her with fantastic terrors never felt before;
So that now, to still the beating of her heart, she stood repeating,
“’Tis some delivery entreating entrance at my door—
Some late package entreating entrance at my door;—
This it is, and nothing more.”

Open here she flung the shutter, when, with many a flirt and flutter,
In there stepped a stately feline of the regal days of yore;
Not the least obeisance made he; not an instant stopped or stayed he;
But, with mien of lord or lady, perched beside her laptop’s core—
Perched upon a bust of Pallas just beside her laptop’s core—
Perched, and sat, and nothing more.

“Tell me,” said she, “sir or madame, what thy lordly name might be?
For I am quite certain that a beast, even as grand as thee,
Is bound by some title, legend, history or decree.”
Quoth the cat, “Meow.”

Much she marvelled this ungainly feline to discourse so plainly,
Though its answer little meaning—little relevancy bore;
For we cannot help agreeing that no living human being
Ever yet was blessed with seeing cat beside their laptop’s core—
Cat or beast upon the sculptured bust beside their laptop’s core,
With a remark as “Meow.”

“Cat,” said she, “that meow’s misleading—still, you are what I’m needing—
Tell me, has the world stopped bleeding? Is there light outside the door?
Has the quarantine been lifted? Are our spirits to be gifted?
Tell me, tell me, I’m so miffed. Tell me, tell me, I implore!”
Quoth the cat, “Meow.”

“Cat!” said she, “prophet! Speak of the virus, this bleak chorus!
By that heaven that bends above us—by the gods we both adore—
Will this damned virus, uninvited, leave us once again united?
Will we hug and be delighted? Tell me, tell me, I implore!”
Quoth the cat, “Meow.”

“Be that word our sign of parting, cat or fiend!” she shrieked, upstarting—
“Get thee back into the tempest and the Night’s Plutonian shore!
Leave no furball as a token of that lie thy soul hath spoken!
Leave my loneliness unbroken!—quit the bust beside my door!
Take thy paws from off my keyboard, and take form from off my door!”
Quoth the cat, “Meow, forevermore.”

And the cat, never flitting, still is sitting, still is sitting
On the pallid bust of Pallas just beside her laptop’s core;
And his eyes have all the seeming of a demon’s that is dreaming,
And the lamp-light o’er him streaming throws his shadow on the floor;
And Freya, from that shadow that lies floating on the floor,
Shall be stuck in Zoom calls—nevermore!
