Okay, so, I dunno if this is the meaning behind this, or if there's even a meaning at all, but I have a theory:
The effects really helped with this because he's facing the light and turning his back to the darkness, with a smile on his face.
He's finally getting out of the dark: Depression, hurt, sadness and into the light: Happiness.
