One could think that, rather I see it like this--
eachother. I love imagining Them both starting off as a kinda bro-sis relationship (Celestia and Twilight Velvet fitting the mother roles moreso), but as time goes on, they see eachother as more than just childhood friends and start seeing a young man/woman respectively. Which leads to ~intimate feelings~ starting to blossom <3! With some confusion for sure because they feel almost too close for that kind of attatchment, but eventually realizing just how much they really do love, need, support, and mean to eachother.
It's awkward, and unconventional, but that's what's so cute about it too!
Rarity was a crush for sure, but after being turned down, looking back on it all, Twilight was Spike's real love all this time <3!
Being the nerdy girl too, I like to imagine Twi going through some self-consciousness as a growing young mare, and having Spike and Shining as her main male references and influences in her life besides her dad.
It's why she always gets annoyed in show when Spike fawns over Rare, like "(After all we've been through,) Why doesn't he ever look at meeee like that ( .////.)??" developing a light jealousy <3!
And then on the flipside, behind the scenes, Spike growing up with MANY strong important female influences around him, and becoming a young drake, there's aloooooot of estrogen around him, on top of >living with< a coming of age mare as well.. sharing a bathroom and bedroom, dirty laundry, the occasional summer day when it's too hot to wear more than undies ('u '), they both get -aloooooot- of inadvertent teasing between eachother, it just all flows so beautifully in my head.
Sorry, I know that was long winded. All in all, Twilight and Spike just kinda happen hard. And even if they never explicitly -date/marry- eachother, they have something really special that's their business doesn't need a label <3!
