Description UPDATED: Now including the map itself, after many, MANY hours of research and a few photo recon trips. Enjoy.

There's a LOT more work going into this one due to the location of the right-of-way through this segment of track, made difficult by housing projects, lakes/dams, an extensive re-alignment project back in 1903, and the freaking Capital Beltway, all of which have a combined effect of swallowing up the old alignment and making it damn near impossible to trace. Also including on this one a small section of the CSX RF&P subdivision down to Cameron Run, and details on the signal heads at the various controlled points.

Because being nerdy as hell can be fun.

Norfolk Southern's Washington District, MP 12 - MP 21, showing current and previous track alignments, signals, control points, and wayside structures.

This has been a personal project of mine for some time now, thought I've only recently found suitable maps with which to compile this data. I sought primarily to map the current and previous track alignments of the Southern (formerly Orange & Alexandria) right-of-way through Fairfax/Devereux, but since I had the maps, I extended it south to MP 30, near Bull Run and Manassas Park, and north to MP 12 at CP Edsall.

In short, this map shows the current track alignment (in red) under Norfolk Southern, as well as the previous alignment as laid out by the Orange & Alexandria (in blue) until Southern Railway's double-tracking project removed many of the line's curves and gradients in 1903.

Feel free to use this as a resource if you wish, particularly if you need a map of the area for your railfanning needs - I just ask that you link back to this deviation if you repost it somewhere. As a note, this prints out nice and large at 600 dpi. I have it at about four feet across by one foot high.
