The acid-etched version, or the birth-defective version? He seems to have a nose under there, so it may be the former.
I do have a soft spot in my head for the musical; after reading the original, it seems to be closer to it than many of the Hollywood versions, and I LOVE Michael Crawford's take on the character ... he's the only one, IMHO, that had the range and the right level of "yes, I'm an awesome musician and singer, and COMPLETELY BUG-NUTS to boot!" in his voice.

Heh ... yeah, in the original old movies, he had been just a relatively ordinary dude until getting hit with acid in the face, which made him a bit nuts. In the original Gaston Leroux (sp.?) story and the musical, he was actually born looking a bit--wanting. Things like, a nose, for instance, among other things (his mom drank alcohol while preggers is the way one story goes). Despite everything, his brain was apparently at the genius level, if a bit cracked ...
