Description The Cloudmushroom

For the first time I saw a fist-sized specimen of this mushroom and was already fascinated by its size and uniqueness. It seemed to be very similar to the common dust fungus/bovist, perhaps an environmental adaptation or mutation. Our research group had been studying the effects of global warming on mushrooms for quite some time as it was only a matter of time before this ancient species would adapt to it. However, due to these extreme events of the recent past, other triggers such as pollution-related mutations have not been excluded. It has been proven that some species of mushrooms could already feed on toxic waste and radioactivity. It is hard to imagine what effects this alone must have had on their development, but even all this still seemed so incredible when I looked at the horizon discolored by spores and saw this once fist-sized mushroom rising out of the clouds like a mountain.

It has always been frightening and fascinating how little we know about mushrooms but now... With every new insight more questions arose than were answered. We no longer understood what was happening around us as quickly as the once familiar environment changed into the unreal while the spore poisoned air distorted our perception. Most other life forms didn't seem to mind, they even seemed to have entered some kind of symbiosis with the mushrooms and, similar to the mushrooms before, showed more and more mutations while the mushrooms became more and more deadly for humans.

The dust or cloud fungus as we called it later on seemed to me more and more like a strange creature. Also the last data of samples that could be taken confirmed certain assumptions of which some could not be mentioned even now for reasons of secrecy even if all this did not really matter anymore since it was only about how and where we should flee to. It was certain that the cloud fungus, even more so than previous mushrooms, resembled more an animal than a plant and showed restraint, which simply could only indicate a high form of intelligence.

Although I had all public and confidential information at my disposal I could hardly believe the facts in front of me. The activity of the cloud fungus seemed to be terraforming in one word. Like a gigantic pump it sucked up all water from the environment and finally gave it enriched with a high mineral content as well as components of toxic and non-toxic kind which could not be assigned to anything known while it even gave off far fewer spores than the other modified mushroom species. The smaller the specimen, the more dangerous it was, even the slightest touch could cause it to release spores. Differently than known dust mushrooms, the touched mushroom did not burst afterwards. It opened spore windows in its upper part reflexively, this was repeated domino like even on mushrooms that were not irritated, which in turn strengthened the theory of cross-linking or even communication of the mushroom.
