I've tried and tried to figure out what this is and why it is in a rest home. I thought perhaps a press of some kind, but I am still lost. Can you shed any light on this object?

Good lord, people iron bedsheets? I haven't ironed anything in years. Well, clothes anyway. Things for renovations and various art projects is all I use my iron for.
