Description so. today's ARTPROBLEM will be about crediting reference pictures.

I really don't get you guyz, who don't do it. what is inside your heads, huh? "day 8, still nobody noticed that I traced someone's work. I'M SUCH AN ARTIST."

while tracing/using poses from drawings is kind of respected, I noticed that crediting photos is totally ignored. A PHOTOGRAPHY is also an artwork guyz! someone took a great photo that inspired you/helped you to draw your lovely picture and you still don't think that it deserve for a credit? imagine that someone used a photo of you as a reference for drawing - probably you'd like to know about it and get a credit in description, right? or that you took a really great photo of you friend. then she posted it and everyone was like "woooah, what a great photo, you're such a good model, amazing!" and I bet that you'd like to read a little 'and thanks to my friend XXX for taking this picture!". think about it and try to be fair.

same story with drawings - "ooh, what a nice pictures! I love them so I'll rip off all poses/clothing/stuff and I'll pretend that I'm the original artist. maybe even I'll sell some prints?". I don't even know what could I say. lack of words. or when I see commissioned pieces that are traced from someone's artwork which is not a stock. think how would you feel if you've put few hours of hard work to draw something...and then someone would just steal it "cool picture, Imma takin' it. no credits!". WTF?!

IT'S NOT A SHAME TO GIVE CREDITS. really. not at all! but it is a shame to be catched at using someone's work without crediting. then why lot of people don't do this, huh?

lot of people use pictures/photos as an inspirations or as a reference for own drawings. I think that almost everyone do that, it's not only the 'beginners-thing'. but while experienced artists have a respect for other artist work, then I noticed that beginners are really shy about telling that they needed some refs for their drawings. once again - it's not a shame.

I feel that because of websites like pinterest/tumblr/soup/wehearit/etc/etc art became anonymous. posting and reposting stuff, removing signatures, cropping pictures, losing original sources... sometimes is really hard to find the original artist but it's still better to give a tiny fuck and give a credit with a link to the ref picture/photo than ignoring someone's hard work.

and it's not only about my pictures (yes, I see tones of my work traced every.single.day.)
it really pisses me off when I see traced or "highly inspired" works without credits.

it's not a shame to give credits. having a respect for someone's work is never a shame.

_ _ _
here you have some EXAMPLES OF CREDITS (it's not that hard, really):

original work by XXX [link to original artwork/artist's website]
poses taken from [link] by XXX
poses taken from [link] whoever the original artist is
clothes taken from [link]
heavily inpired by [link]
_ _ _
oh, and yes! some of you noticed that sometimes you need to take lot of refs - some for clothes, some for poses, some for colors and the result don't remind of any ref photo. a nice mix. and that's alright, it would be really confusing to write all the refs.

and about inspirations - yes, there's a big difference between "oh, nice idea, I'll do something similiar but in my own way" and "oh, nice idea, I'll draw completely the same picture but with my characters". so yea. there's a difference. but still - sometimes it's just nice to share inspirations : )

I mean I take pictures of myself and then draw. Yeah I might get inspiration for a pose but I don't really trace it. I'll do a pose that I want and I'll do it but with something else.

I think one of the big reasons why people don't give credits is cause when they say "I looked at a bunch of references to help me make this." people who don't understand what that means think it is less impressive. When really its not. So people feel like they shouldn't give credits so people think their work is better.

Dearest Fukari, I used one one your drawings of Offelia as a reference for a recent drawing. To be honest, I would love to draw like you!! I gave you full credit - including a link to your drawing so that there is no confusion.

You are being absolutely fair to demand that people give you credit AND people who don't are being VERY dishonest.

I love your work!

I usually use a reference for poses, but I always tweak it to the point were it isn't the same pose but maybe the foot is in the same position(I do not trace), but the toes won't be, or maybe the hips are at the same angle but every thing else isn't. Sorta like I use a point of reference and from there it goes into its own thing. At that point I don't see the need to reference a 70° angle?? Especially bc the proportions I use are never like the reference. If you trace YOU SHOULD ALWAYS CREDIT. But if i took a selfie and u used the position of my hand in your drawing, i wouldn't be too bothered. It would be cool to know but i dont see the need to be like omg bitch you drew my hand with nO CREDIT thATS MyyYYY fuCkING hANd oh my goddd. Its courteous. Give credit where its due yeah.

I was thinking the same think. Or the thought has derived from a different place and you only need the pose for confirmation on one muscle placement.
I think real artists never really use a reference picture as a copy paste and simply only REFERENCE for what is already your artwork.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Juneias In reply to Caslyon [2015-10-29 22:46:28 +0000 UTC]

yeah, actually you should never copy and paste and trace it as your own work. Its fine for practice related things. Like I would do so when I first started using a (like 2 years ago??)to get the hang of it, but I never posted/shared it and they are all deleted by now.

I noticed on my resource class this Freshman sketches a lot. "Cool", I thought. Until I saw her looking at her phone and perfectly mimicking the picture!
Then I saw her hop onto deviantArt, don't know how she managed to do this, because at our school dA is considered a bad website thus making it blocked, and redraw what someone else did.
The only time when she does a free style is when she draws fucking ponies. Then I saw, despite not wearing my glasses, I could see she had A LOT of notes and comments. Next time I see her doing this, I'll ask her, "Do you even credit?:

You know for along time photography wasn't really considered an art. I took a class that dealt with the beginning of the photography and other early mediums that led to the creation of cinema. Some people who were photographers in the early days, 1700-1900, basically wanted to replace the painters and freehand artists. If people wanted portraits made, they had to go to a painter or freehand artist. Supposedly photography didn't become an "art" til the 20th century. I've taken photography, its definitely not something thats easy to master. Making photographs artistic can also be difficult.

I feel like most people these days don't respect photography that much. Maybe thats why people don't bother to credit them? I agree with what you're saying. I spoke to a friend about how on Tumblr people basically just share artwork, but don't care about talking about who the artist is. It sucks so much, anyway its good that you brought this up .

I get what you're saying, but you don't always have to give credit, like poses for instance. If I find an artwork with a person doing a great pose, and I only reference the pose, I'm not inclined to give credit. Almost every pose has been posed before, so giving credit in this case is kind of pointless. But using a stock photo or making an exact or near exact replica must be credited for. Some photographer tried to sue another guy for have a similar photo to hers. But the photo was distinguishable enough that the judge ruled in his favor. My teacher always said, when in doubt, give credit. She was talking about research papers, but it applies to art and referencing art too.

so isnt original art just tracing from memory and inspiration simply about remembering more objects in your mind that you can copypaste on A4 whenever you want? I hardly believe we´d go to schools anymore if all basics of study could be so unique and different

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Fukari In reply to semilaiska [2015-06-01 18:19:27 +0000 UTC]

art isn't only about tracing things from memories, but also about the concept, emotions, colors, mixing and matching things etc etc. simply take a look at any stock photo and the ways that different people used it - one stock photo but many different ways of using it, many different concepts that makes them look unique. using your creativity to make a picture - that's okay. but copying someone's work - that's not okay.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

semilaiska In reply to Fukari [2015-06-01 20:55:37 +0000 UTC]

concepts are related to memories just like colours mixes&matches which is why it pretty much looks like tracing from a memory. everyone knows what a tree looks like and you have either comic, realistic or abstract way to portrait it just like with a human being and it doesnt really get more complex than that. if you saw beach it´s still the same beach even though some other guy saw it before you, and if he was tracing from memory before you to record history -- which you could do nothing about coz you didn´t know about it -- you can now learn and profit from the effort without making the same progress for nothing yourself. Don´t let it be waste and don´t forget your current work is based on tracing.

if your city suffered a natural disaster you´d be tracing that thing from memory out of the will to tell your story forward and improve the basic survival instinct of a man. In the current culture for most whites there are no wars so survival instinct gets ingored and it´s mostly about focusing to pleasure and entertainment, until the war starts again when people will start again focusing on how they survived in the first place. If that makes any sense.

It´s all okay.
