Description With everything I've submitted recently, there's a reason. This one has a reason not involving boredum or spontaneous thought, so be nice to it.

I was asked to participate in helping at a Health Fair at school by contributing art. And the theme of our table is "Benefits of Tea" and the guidelines given by my club president was: an anime character doing something with tea. So, since I've been watching Hetalia, I drew tea-drinking countries with.. tea... Yeah, well it makes sense to me.

So, here we have China with a panda, and tea leaves; also a cup of tea and a kettle. Next is England (major tea-sipper) and his little brother Sealand being drug on a tea bag. Where? On an adventure. B| After them, is Japan (another avid tea drinker) sipping tea. Which is... very common I hear. 8B /so not being an onboxious smartass deprived of rest And finally, we have the Italy brothers Veneziano and Romano accompanied by stray bags of tea and a tea box (which I know I drew wrong but was rushing SO THEREFORE, I do not care >I); also, Veneziano's wavin' the tea lovin' flag. Not sure if he'd drink tea over nomming agonizingly large amounts of stomach-obliterating gelato, but hell, it's for a last-minute project and his frilly ass will submit to my whims! D<

No offense but bears are plantigrades, not digitigrades

Is that really necessary? It is standing on the soles, not the toes. I have drawn/studied the body of bears before, I know they walk/stand differently than digitigrade animals.

Yes, I see that that is a panda, captain obvious. Like what she drew. Anything else?

*sigh* If you looked more carefully you'd be able to tell the difference of how the feet come in contact with the ground and even how the limbs distribute the weight

It might seem too much of a minor detail for you, but it's something that people notice and lowers the quality of the work. And your type of reaction isn't helping in the artist's credibility department either

And butch hartman draws people with pointy faces and feet. >_> It's a DRAWING, not a photograph. Stop nitpicking.

Yes, but he keeps the style consistent so there's no visual clash
In this case we have good human anatomy but then the panda's legs ruin the harmony. It's a very serious problem for an artist

You just contradicted yourself; you said good HUMAN anatomy. Humans and animals, while both organisms, aren't the same artstically. Calling an artist out over ONE mistake is like calling out stephen king for having a typo in one of his books. You can't expect everything to be 100% every single time an image is submitted. This is deviantart, not the Musee de Louvre.

The keyword was anatomy, not human

And you ignored the entire rest of what I said to you, too. Just because someone is good at drawing humans doesn't mean they're good at drawing animals. Frankly, I've seen people do much worse while drawing COMMONLY seen mammals. The artist sees people every day, she doesn't go to the memphis zoo on a regular basis to visit the panda couple there. =/ Stop being ridiculous.

Because I was trying to be polite and end the argument quietly or not make it go into a completely different direction

First of all the difference between the bases of human and animal anatomy is irrelevant in this situation. We are talking about the base structure both are based upon, not the ability to draw the "skin"
The ability it takes to draw one base structure is the same as doing the other (posing them is a completely different question, but again that's not the issue here). So seeing an artist of her skill getting that detail wrong is a big flaw and worth pointing it out for her sake

Second she did mentioned that she drew bears before, so it's not the same thing as drawing an animal for the first time. Even if she was it's not hard nowadays to find good references over the internet, so visiting the zoo on purpose is not a valid excuse

Anyway all I'm doing here is pointing out what I consider the biggest problem with the picture in general and that should be kept in mind in the future if she wants to improve as an artist (I even checked the rest of her works to see if this was just a momentary lapse or a reoccurring situation)
What she does with my warning is her choice. But for the sake of her talent I really hope she does listen and doesn't limit herself

Well, here's another way to look at it. Nobody draws perfect. Everything has a flaw. And I'm sorry, but you're making yourself out to seem like a perfectionist. Frankly, the person who drew this hasn't drawn pandas a lot. In fact, I think that this is maybe the first time she's drawn one. Everybody has their own style, and they shouldn't have to worry about others criticizing what they do when it doesn't look like what you would draw. She's a great artist; greater than some that I've seen. So maybe you should consider that nothing is drawn in perfection. It's perfect in it's own way.

Do you realize the style excuse doesn't apply here because the point I was talking about has nothing to do with it?

Yes everyone has their own style and their own strengths and weaknesses. I can tell by looking at her art that her main strength is drawing people, but when it comes to animals it doesn't match her level so well
That's what I find that's damaging her the most as an artist and I tried to point out the anatomy of the legs was not a minor flaw like some others, but a big issue

I understand you're trying to defend your friend, but keep in mind that ignoring the flaws doesn't help in the self improvement and overcoming your weaknesses
If you want to take my warning that the panda's legs are greatly inaccurate (anatomy is the backbone for any figure and pose, so a major flaw to have if unfixed) then all the best for her. If you don't fine by me. I just find a shame to see talent to be wasted by not being able to swallow a critic

P.S: About me being a perfectionist, yes I am but mainly towards myself. If I really wanted to point out every single detail I could have done much worse than just the panda legs
