I will admit, the hair is different. Then again, sometimes, Goku's hair never made sense anyway.
You just capture Goku's innocence and love of challenges and adventures all through his life, even though alot of people consider GT non canon. (Personally, I could go either way.) You just give his face a warm glow that is as much a part of his character as his hair or the Kamehameha.

Half the fun of drawing Goku is working how the heck to draw his hair in your own style. But wow, thank you so much for this comment! It's really the feel I was going for with this and I'm glad it shows. GT was part of my life growing up with DB, so I felt that I had to include it, canon or no (though I did get my fair share of people commenting on the inclusion of GT at the convention, haha).

I started noticing DB around the GT era, too. I knew about DBZ, but GT was the one showing the most, I think. I'm a little bit late to the DB bandwagon. But, I love it, now!
