Description Work in progress title. It was codenamed Ident until just now.
So this is a storyboard for another of my ideas for my uni project. This time it features Kaeman and Nohman (since I never finished the last one I did of them). Again, it was sketched out in pen in an A3 sized pad so I had to piece it together in Paint Shop Pro. I had to change the order of the frames second row from the bottom; I drew them in an order that didn't really make sense so switched them around.
I have an alternate end in mind where Kaeman jumps into the air and slashes downward with the paintbrush (yeah, I need to make it clear that's what he's holding). Watch the first opening to Full Metal Alchemist and you might get what I mean.

So, opinions plz

The best thing I can think of is to think of your storyboard and animation/comic/etc as if you were actually watching it take place - much like watching a movie or TV show. Get an idea of the interesting angles to use for when the scene needs them, and make sure that each scene can be easily "read" and understood.

Once you've got the storyboard drawn up, go back and read over it again as if you have no idea about what it is beforehand. Does it make sense? Can you understand what's happening just from the images alone? Are the character's actions clear?
If any of this isn't as clear as it could be, you should revisit some of those panels and either make some changes or add more panels to flesh out what is happening at that point so that it's easier to read. Every important action should really have it's own panel so as to show the viewer exactly what's happening.

Basically, think of it as it's own movie that you go through frame-by-frame, picking out the most important parts.

I wish I could draw storyboards, animate. By the way, are those names inspired of: "okay man" and "no man" ? Nice names!

I really like your style!

funkyalien In reply to Yasmina-K [2007-08-27 14:28:02 +0000 UTC]

Funny enough, they're actually not inspired by that at all. That was a total coincidence that it ended up being like that
Their names actually come from my nickname, K-man, and the need for something that sounded opposing, in this case, Nohman from Zone of the Enders (no man also sounding like one who doesn't exist). Both of these are my positive and negative sides. The fact that it sounds like 'kay man and no man was something I didn't even realise until someone pointed it out to me a few months ago

Oops! It still is funny though... Funny that there was someone else that thought the same as me... But the names are nice, and the storyboard too!
If you find the time, you should really make an animation of it!

Also, I think that alternate ending would work better.

funkyalien In reply to AsterixVII [2006-10-22 12:08:49 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, that would be better. I'll have to do this one in my spare time though since it turns out that I'm not doing this one for my course. How knows, maybe I'll be able to do both if I find the time.

This is very clean and easy to follow. Your expressions are very dynamic and create a solid sense of the character and the action. The red motion is very helpful. Is that a storyboarding standard? (I totally ignorant of the art of storyboarding.) This clear presentation definitely makes me what to see it animated.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

funkyalien In reply to kikuneko [2006-09-20 11:46:54 +0000 UTC]

Thanks
Drawing the motion lines and arrows and such could be considered standard, yes. To be honest we haven't really been taught how to storyboard very well so I'm basic most of my standards how ~Mars-and-Uranus do their storyboards and animatics.

funkyalien In reply to shaedow4774 [2006-09-20 11:30:14 +0000 UTC]

LOL Well there actually is a second half to this but I haven't written it yet. Basically the idea is that this goes at the start of my showreel. After all the other animations have played, the second half goes at the end. That'll be something like Nohman just being defeated and Kaeman finally getting his idea. Don't get to see the actual battle I'm afraid, but I could always do that another day

shaedow4774 In reply to funkyalien [2006-09-20 15:45:48 +0000 UTC]

hmmm, sounds even MORE exciting!!!

0.o, you shale put up the second half...and the third, fighting is good for the soul <3333

but then, is this like a sketch board in order to do a small flash?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

funkyalien In reply to shaedow4774 [2006-09-20 20:04:06 +0000 UTC]

Well kinda, but not in Flash. I'm gonna animate it traditionally on paper since I find it easier that way.
I might do the second half but I'll have to finish the other ideas first.

You have an awesome aspect on story boards ^^ I used to do these all the time when I first started drawing because I really wanted to do animations. Found out that I can't animate worth two pennies. So now I do comics to suffice.

Show me more woo!

funkyalien In reply to Underworlder666 [2006-09-19 00:56:51 +0000 UTC]

Hehe, there should be some more in a few days or so. I'll need to get working on my next idea now I'm pretty much done with this one. It's weird since I usually hate doing storyboards, but for some reason I'm enjoying it now
And animation'n pretty much about practice and learning the principals. I'm still not great at it but I'll try and get the practice in where I can (I just wish I could practice more often)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Underworlder666 In reply to funkyalien [2006-09-19 02:59:09 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, as they say, practice makes perfect. But I'm in the same boat as you, I just don't get to practice often enough to get any better at it. Heh, I geuss I'll stick to comics for now.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

funkyalien In reply to Underworlder666 [2006-09-20 11:13:07 +0000 UTC]

Annoying thing is that I'm studying animation as a degree course and I don't have time to practice. That just seems wrong to me, but I guess that's why I'm a class rep. I'm supposed to get changes to happen
Comics are great though, in fact that's probably what makes my storyboards come out the way they do

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Underworlder666 In reply to funkyalien [2006-09-20 20:40:38 +0000 UTC]
