Description Sooner or later I'll move this to my scraps.

Another practice animation. This was a spur-of-the-moment thing, I hadn't animated much in Flash and needed the practice.
I've also always wanted to animate a fight scene
As you may have guessed, it's Felicia (White Shadow) fighting a knife wielding adversary. Sooner or later I'll have a full picture of her.

The good: I like the movements of the characters. It's clearly a high-paced battle, and I don't seem to have made any obvious continuity errors. I also managed to keep the anatomy relatively consistent. The camera work was good to experiment with too. I love how the end came out ^__^
The bad: Personally, I think some of the timing is off in places. Something I need to work on, but at least it's not as bad as some of my other animations. I also realied a little too heavily on 1's in this one (animation term). Also, the eye/mouth shots before the end just plain suck.
Other than that, I'm happy with this one and may even do a fully rendered version when I can.

Edit: Added some secondary animation such as the hair and dress. Gave it a preloader as it was getting a bit large. I also got rid of those weird green lines at the end, and shortened the pause in Felicia's side kick.

Media: All drawn in Macromedia Flash MX 2004

(now why couldn't/didn't I animate like this on my course?)

My only comment is that the landing when it zooms out is a little stiff. Ease her in to it a bit. Oh, also the whole piece seems a bit claustrophobic. I'd love to see a scene where both bodies are in full view, likely at the beginning (a stand-off maybe?) Otherwise, wow, just wow!!!

Oh this one's really old now, so I'd probably a whole lot better with it all.
Still great to hear some advice with it though. You're right about it needing some full body shots to open it up a bit more. Given enough time I may consider doing another one with these two to see how much I've learned since then

Waw! Do you really do all of this on flash? ...I have a program called Macromedia Flash MX, is that the one?

funkyalien In reply to Nyla-Cat [2010-07-22 13:18:19 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, that's the one, those now Flash is owned by Adobe. Flash MX is one of the older versions, but still does the jobs just as well when it comes to animating

Thankyou so much for answering T^T Woah!! Gosh you must be talented...to do all of that on Flash! You know how to convert a flash file into one that can go on DA?

funkyalien In reply to Nyla-Cat [2010-07-27 21:31:17 +0000 UTC]

In the main menu, go to Flie>Publish. There, you can save out an SWF file, which is what you upload to dA and other websites when you publish out a flash animation

Very good, !

I kinda wonder why people can do this level of animation in fight scenes, yet most cartoons and such only have the flashing-colors-with-a-still-of-a-character-screaming, followed by a flash of light and the bad guy falling to the floor.

funkyalien In reply to Nirodragon [2007-11-24 14:59:37 +0000 UTC]

Quite a few reasons really. As far as I'm aware, it's mostly from anime and is often used in western animation too. It's generally because it's much quicker to do and far cheaper. People need to take the time to coreograph entire sequences like this, and martial arts coreography isn't all that easy to do. It's also very expensive to animate whole sequences like this due to the extra frames that need drawing and the time it'd take to do it, and the studios need to save money.

Sometimes they could do more I'll admit, it bothers me too. Still, it doesn't come cheap, believe me.

But hey, it's still good to practice it every now and then

Nirodragon In reply to funkyalien [2007-11-25 03:49:00 +0000 UTC]

You have a very good point there...

Anime is expensive enough to buy as it is, and that would be a lot of work for a ten second scene...

Thanks for clearing that up for me! xD

funkyalien In reply to hyperfreakin [2007-08-25 22:59:20 +0000 UTC]

I'm not likely to. It's now well over two years old and I've got better since then. I may as well just animate a new one, but I haven't got the time for it right now.

It wouldn't really have made a difference. You'd have just seen it then instead of now, but it would still end up like this.

thats really cool mate
pls tell me, did u keyframe in this animation, or did you have to draw in each frame?
im a CG animator but i am really interested in traditional animation too, the only problem with it is the time it takes. but, flash would be loads quicker than drawing it on paper! anways, please tell me

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

funkyalien In reply to stompalot [2007-08-19 14:56:59 +0000 UTC]

Hm, that actually strikes me as an odd question. The basic principles of animation use both keyframes and drawing each frame, so I think what you're really asking is if I used 'tweens' in Flash, to which the answer is no
I drew out the keyframes of the important actions, mostly a motion at it's extreme. Then I drew in each frame between them with the right timing to actually animate it. The only thing I used 'tweens' for was the website address moving at the end.

stompalot In reply to funkyalien [2007-08-20 07:36:38 +0000 UTC]

ok thanks, that answers my question. probably phrased it badly, "key frames" are when you only make a few frames and the computer fills in the ones between. flash probably cant do that, im just used 3D things. also how many frames did it take?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

funkyalien In reply to stompalot [2007-08-20 13:02:34 +0000 UTC]

Flash can do it, just only with something that's been set as a symbol to be moved around. It's not as simple as 3D in that respect, but it can be done. That would be the 'tweening' I mentioned, set the symbol to a few keyframes and it fill it in.
But anyway, I'm not really too sure how many frames this was. As it's about 15 seconds I'm gonna guess at around 180 drawn frames (12 drawings a second).

holy crap thats amazing. how come u can do that and i cant all the attacks and dodges and poses and expressions were super dynamic like they teach for comic book art. i couldnt get 1 frame right let alone a whole animation. thats fantastic i love it! oh im excited now want to make my own lol u are my inspiration.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Zairyo In reply to funkyalien [2006-09-10 21:58:04 +0000 UTC]

Maybe, but one of the most important things is how fluid the animation looks and that gravity exists and you have both things nailed. As an extra your choices for camera angles are also great which makes you the complete package, animator and director.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

funkyalien In reply to Zairyo [2006-09-10 22:03:21 +0000 UTC]

Well I like to try and make interesting camera angles and such. It's good to have both animation and directorial skills since it would be pretty boring otherwise. I like trying thing like that
