How do you make these? Is there a pattern you follow, or do you know it by heart? I try HARD to make tops and they never come out just right.

I must admit, I have the same problem, making tops is not one of my stongest points >_<
I hate working with store bought patterns because I feel too constricted so I generally just make my own but I do waste quite a bit of fabric trying to get them right, heh. My advice is to use really cheap fabric until you can get it right, or you can use a pattern and try to make the changes you want to that
