heh, thats funny I was working on a doodle today from a head shot and couldnt for the life of me get it to work. I was basically wondering how to break it down into shapes like you do, but the lighting was so diffused i just couldnt figure it out. This helps me see the actual process some! Thanks!

Glad it helps. Ambient light is treated the same way.
The big difference is you really have to make sure the
shapes are correct. There's a drawing idea called closure.
It's where when angles and marks mimic or hint at corners
so your eye makes the connection. It's a very useful tool
to learn. Try doing some Sargeant mastercopies. Look for the
ones that have almost no rendering in the face. He really designs
the face mask shape and the internal shapes to hint at corners.
If you're trying to study forms, it's better to work with a single
light source. When you simplify those shapes you'll see a pattern.
I'll try and it explain it better in a demo soon. Bud and I are making
a cliff note figure book
