Yeah abs are weird. When I was a kid I got most of my anatomy lessons from he-man but then one day I got ahold of Arnold Schwarzenegger's encyclopedia of bodybuilding, and got to actually see what real life built guys looked like, and the first difference I noticed were the abs. Asymmetrical abs, or the ones that have the gap down the center (not sure what causes this). After that it made me realize that its those little variations that really identify the individual. BTW I am digging this style you are working with these days, but I am also happy you are maintaining your traditional style in your portraits. Would hate to see you move off that all together.

Thanks. I'm really trying to incorporate the European artists I like into the
old American Illustrator style. I suspected there were European influences
on certain artist like Dean Cornwell. Looks like Cornwell was influenced
by Fechin.

If I can combine super designy forms with good edges. I think I'll have my style.

lol He man anatomy is pretty awesome. Still trying to figure it out myself.

I think as it stands you have a pretty distinct style. I mean there is def. enough divergence from JCL for it to stand on its own, but certainly it will evolve as your tastes change. Can def. see the relationship between cornwell and fechin, but with a guy like Fechin you will have a tough time finding illustrators who dont have some signs of his influence. I kinda feel the same way about Hopper and Lautrec. In any case, keep it up, it is great fun watching the evolution.

I use painter for these studies. I use all default settings
with the oil brush and bristol brush. I have a rule for studies
like these. All on one layer and no ctrl z I miss painting
traditionally and painter gives me a quick fix

Usually painting em perfect to maintain form and unevening them
up seem to be the best route to go
