You're way too harsh on yourself - I think you did a great job . You captured his expression well - especially the kind of distant look in his eye.

You think so? I still think my wolves look very weird. TuT But thank you very much for the compliment.
Thank you~, drawing the eye was the best part for me right after the nose. I love wolf eyes.

I've never got to walk with the european wolves - it is sad that one of them passed away - they've lost quite a few over the past couple of years - I guess inevitable given their age. Great that they've got two sets of cubs now though!

They have a high viewing platform by one of the enclosures which is open on the Open Days (assuming it's not raining really hard and making the steps slippery!), so if you're lucky it's possible to get nice clean shots of whatever wolves they have in there on the day. You need a good zoom lens for it though!

Also on the open days they sometimes have an enclosure where they let you inside the outer fence and have some portions of the fence where you can poke a lens through.

Having said all that, if the wolf isn't too near the fence, you can get near the fence, your camera has a decent zoom and you can make sure the camera leaves the aperture as wide as possible (for a relatively shallow depth of field) then it's possible to get shots through the fence where the fence just shows up as slight distortion lines. In fact I'm not sure if you could tell, but this photo was taken through the fence .

aw yeah, i really wanna see the cubs!

ooh gonna have to go on a open day then equipped with a zoom lense lol, what zoom is best in your opinion? i need to get one i currently have a lumix G2 and its 42 in zoom, 0.3 m or 1 ft

really? wow i see what you mean, a good shot!

FurLined In reply to Howlecho [2011-07-16 13:35:07 +0000 UTC]

My kit is all Nikon, so I know Nikon best! I had a quick google for information on the G2 and it's a four-thirds sensor which gives a crop factor of about 2. From looking around I think the ideal zoom lens for your camera would be the "Panasonic Lumix G Vario 45-200mm MEGA F4.0-5.6 O.I.S" lens (or rather, if I had your camera that's the one I'd look at). Its zoom range starts just after your current lens stops, so they would make a good set of lenses to have. Looks like amazon have it for about Β£260.

On your camera the long end on that lens of 200mm would give shots that look similar in terms of zoom to my shots of Motomo - the depth of field might be a little greater though so if you did shoot through a fence it might be a little more noticeable than on my camera/lens combination. That lens has optical image stabilisation which would help avoid camera shake blurring the images when zoomed. Panasonic also do a 100mm-300mm lens which would zoom in even further, but that costs double the amount and unless you're going to do a lot of distant photography would be a bit of a waste!

Yes that is a shame, becuse I'm planning to go on a wolf walf soon (when I save up enough XD)

FurLined In reply to fujichick [2011-06-03 20:34:50 +0000 UTC]

Well he was a bit more shy when Mai was taken out to have her cubs, but now she's back he seemed pretty content to stare at people on the open day recently . I've just uploaded another photo of him! Maybe when you get your wolf walk the cubs will be ready to meet people

I was there at the open day, but the weather was pretty bad so I didn't get any good pictures of him Ok i'll look at it, and I hope so!

FurLined In reply to fujichick [2011-06-04 08:16:23 +0000 UTC]

I found another one that came out ok . Compared to the dire predictions for the weather there had been on the day before I didn't think it was too bad in the morning - I guess it went down hill a bit in the afternoon though (I left around lunch time)!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

fujichick In reply to FurLined [2011-06-04 13:32:02 +0000 UTC]

Yes it did, I came in the afternoon and got soaked! Just asking- how do you manage to not get the fence of the enclosure in your pictures? Because its in the way of all of my pictures

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

FurLined In reply to fujichick [2011-06-04 14:12:15 +0000 UTC]

Well in the shot above the fence was actually in the way, but I had my long lens on at full zoom (300mm) with the aperture forced at the widest (f5.6 - it's not a fast lens) so the depth of field was shallow enough, the fence near enough and the focal point far enough away that I got away with it . You can see some hints of the fence causing distortion in the background, but they're subtle! The other two shots I took from the viewing platform - this time the long lens came in handy as when Motomo was standing so the fence wasn't in the way he also wasn't so close.

fujichick In reply to FurLined [2011-06-04 14:23:45 +0000 UTC]

Ok thanks, Ill try that next time Youre lucky, the viewing platform was closed because of the rain when I was there!

You weren't kidding about the weather being bad then! I'm fortunate enough not to live too far away, and didn't have anything else planned on the Monday, so I looked at the weather report in the morning and picked when I thought I might not get drowned
