I always wonder what they think about. Sometimes I ask, like 20 questions and I'll get a reaction on one of them. I'm never certain though.

This is a beautiful image. The texture is gorgeous and works so well with it.

does this dog do anything apart from lying around and looking all coy?

hehe!
laika enjoys: lounging like a princess, barking her head off when she doesn't get her way, and rummaging through the garbage.
laika's turnoffs include: being told "no" over and over, obeying her masters, and not getting all the treats she demands!

thank you i'm a novice with texture, and my husband says i overdo it, but it's fun to play! i think scanning textures is a great idea! i'm eventually going to play with cactus textures, too.

if your husband says you overdo it, he is not very familiar with what's on da.

futurowoman In reply to equivoque [2006-08-12 16:57:31 +0000 UTC]

exactly!
he's a "real" artist, so i think DA is slightly pedestrian for him...i keep telling him there's a lot of real art on here, but i don't think he believes me.

equivoque In reply to futurowoman [2006-08-12 17:37:24 +0000 UTC]

i think proportionally there really isn't much art on this site. i think there is a small collection of some fine photographers. don't know about traditional art. it seems there is a social component to which we are addicted.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

futurowoman In reply to equivoque [2006-08-12 19:17:31 +0000 UTC]

agreed. i've seen some amazing photography on here, some nice design, and some nice paintings/collage---but the vast amount of it, i just ignore. i'm glad it's here, and it's great that anyone can make a site, but one of the problems with the internet is that everyone comes to believe they are a (insert here: artist, writer, historian, journalist, expert, etc) just because they say they are. elevating self-esteem can get far out of hand!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

equivoque In reply to futurowoman [2006-08-12 19:30:49 +0000 UTC]

whereas, true artists, writers, musicians, etc. never seem to say they are [insert term here]. they refer to themselves as painting, composing, [insert verb here].

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

futurowoman In reply to equivoque [2006-08-12 19:38:02 +0000 UTC]

exactly!
my husband, aside from being a filmmaker, a composer, a musician, and a mixed-media artist (he's very cool!) is also a philosopher. he's written a piece about this phenomenon that i want him to publish. if he ends up doing so, i'll pass it along. i think he's quite astute in the way he treats this new emboldened generation that has been taught they are perfectly-formed (fill in the blank--artists, experts, whatever) just because they say they are and have a webspace.

if only it were that easy to become a doctor or a lawyer. there is another thought. why do artists rank so low that people feel they can assume that role without any special training? i'm not sure i have a valid point, but it is something to think about.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

futurowoman In reply to equivoque [2006-08-13 20:15:24 +0000 UTC]

no, i think that IS the point! it's like this idea of: "everyone is creative" or "i can do that!" that has crept into our society--instead of taking the time to think about what being an artist actually means, such as having the vision AND the talent to execute it, people just think it's a function to be performed ("i have a camera/box of pencils/animation program so i can do that, too!")----it boils down to the science/technology mythology, that if you have the tools, you'll instinctively be able to use them.

when i look at REAL artists, the people who not only spend all of their time learning their crafts, but also learning about the world of art and the world at large, i am humbled. i certainly think i have some talent, but i wouldn't deign to consider myself a real Artist (i do consider myself a writer, that's my real skill.) but a lot of people think that if they shoot something with their instant digital point and shoot or scribble while talking on the phone, it's Art. maybe it is, and i'm wrong, but i don't think so.

sorry to rant

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

equivoque In reply to futurowoman [2006-08-13 20:46:55 +0000 UTC]

that's not a rant. i guess i see myself as being the kind of person who lives an artistic life and whose need for artistic expression is a major part of identity. in that way, i self-identify as an artist. not in a lofty way. just a fact of who i am. i have always been that way since i can remember. artistic expression will result in some form... just give me a medium (that i can use effectively, of course). the ones i've explored have been instrumental music (classical piano and flute), writing (mostly poetry), vocal music (jazz and blues), and photography. i wonder if an artist might be fundamentally different in some ways from doctor, lawyer, whatever, which opens it up for the phenomenon you describe. it might be more integral to who a person is that some occupations. i know that those professions become integral to self-identification, but artist seems to come in before a person makes her way into the world. i guess mom is an occupation with that degree of self-identification attached. dad, too, i guess, though i can't say since i'm not one. of course, to humble ourselves further, some people don't even think photography is art.
