Description April 1st was the night of the Tayuu Douchu, or Tayuu Parade, in which two Tayuu walk down the Takasegawa river in full style and then gave a small ceremony in a park nearby. There are only six women who continue to uphold the traditions of the Tayuu.

"The women in these guarded quarters were "playmates" (yuujo) or prostitutes (shougi). The highest ranked were called oiran or "great court ladies" (tayuu). These women were dubbed "castle-destroyers" (keisei) because their sex appeal, like the mythical beauties of history, could destroy a man as easily as any army. These courtesans wore layers of ornately decorated kimono and a multitude of lacquer and tortoiseshell combs in their hair. Their wide, brocaded obi were tied in front — not, as some suppose, because it was easier to undress that way, but because that was the practice of married women and a yuujo was, in a sense, a wife for an evening. " (Liza Dalby)

She said it far better than I could.

I believe this is Furisode Tayuu, but I'm not 100% sure of that. She also looks a lot a lot like Usugumo Tayuu (the two just look a lot alike), so if I'm wrong, I'll correct all of the titles and statements.

Edit- It's Usugumo after all.

Wow, what an oppourtunity you had to see the Tayuu Douchu, I'd give anything just to see a Geiko or Maiko! Beautiful photo, too ~ I'm drooling over her ensemble! xD

Her ensemble is totally drool-worthy . I was really honored to have a chance to see tayuu, geiko, and maiko during my stay in Japan. I really hope I'll have that same chance again.

Whoa. That is just so.... She looks incredible. Is that a particular kind of geta that only the Tayuu wear? I've never seen anything like it. Holy moly.

Thank you!

Tayuu and Oiran wear a particular kind of geta that is either called mitsu-ashi or koma-geta. It is characterized by its height and having three 'teeth' as the support. Oiran in general wear higher komageta than Tayuu.

I love the Tayuu's ensembles the most. They're so detailed and sumptuous.

I love all the colors. Right away you see the red, cream, cold, and ochres, but if you look closer you suddenly see a pop of bright green!

It's beautiful, so detailed, especially in the small embroidery .

I've seen it before, though, it was used in last year's Tayuu Douchu. I don't think they've comissioned a new uchikake in a while...
