The Library

I step over the threshold onto hallowed ground. The chilly bite of the winter air receeds behind me, replaced instead by the heavy warmth of books and dust and shelves.

I’m all alone, but I feel less so now than before. The people in the room turned away as I walked in, and I paid them no mind. They stand like wraiths in the corners, stooping like gargoyles on the edge of my sight. They keep watch from high above over their sacred charges, but leave me to be. This is my home as much as theirs. I belong here as much as they.

The room becomes a cavern, my only guide a lantern light that shows the way. A thousand shelves stand over me a thousand feet high, their ponderous load the weight and fate of a thousand worlds. Each tome bears the gateway to life and discovery. Should I pick one, a different life will be mine to lead. A different world, a new lesson to learn. A thousand books, a thousand lives.

So I step carefully, tread lighty, and revere the sacred silence of these hallowed halls. A ladder here helps me rise to an unexplored height. Perhaps there I’ll find what I’m looking for.

In the darkness of my world shines the light of these thoughts. They dive and swoop in the air like the messenger birds of Zeus sent to guide his heros of old. Each bears news of a mission, of a quest, of a lesson I can learn. Each is my friend, and the friend of all who come to sojorn in these dusty halls.

But today they come just for me. A friend roosts lightly on my shoulder. I have found what I came seeking, so I reach up, and take my book.

Then, in the quiet and beauty of this sacred place, I take my seat, and read.
