Very clever and quaint. I like how, despite how dull the prompt seems, you created such in depth and driven characters.

Dear God, this reads like PG Wodehouse! I've been sniggering into my Madeira the whole time I've been reading, thinking of all the professors I've known who fit exactly into this type. And I must say I appreciate the fondness with which you can poke fun at this peculiar breed of academic. Well done.
Now, where can one attain membership papers for this Oxford Oxford Comma Preservation Society?

My first impulse was to type 'Ooh, you magnificent little bitch' but I've decided to retract that in favour of 'I lolled.'

This is really great. You create the atmosphere beautifully, and I love Scudder's dialogue especially.

This is absolutely hilarious, "sir." (It's a Peppermint Patty thing, now. Stay with me on this) I was hoping that someone could find something to do with that prompt, and I'm glad that you picked it up. At multiple points in this, I literally had to stop to catch my breath. Most notably, the "Comma, and slogans?" bit. Absolutely slayed me.

Not so fanatical as we are led to initially believe, hmm, Handley?
I love how it takes Scudder and Handley forever to reach the decision that action must be taken, only for their resolve to dwindle the draft of a letter. For all their meeting and resolutions, it appears that they - on a level not entirely conscious, perhaps - see the futility of their protests. You depicted their genteel and ever so sophisticated death throes elegantly.
