Description This is Jack the Cat's older brother, Hubert. I had no idea he had a brother, but you learn something new every day.

This render is from a series I did converting old DAZ3D M4 textures for Genesis 3 Male. The texture is from Kane for M4, which is what I used for Jack, hence the family resemblance. Created with DAZ Studio 4.9 and rendered with Iray.

Jack the Cat, just in case you missed him:

And a bonus "painting" version:

thanks, i was wondering about the Blacksmith option.

i may just go with finding close fits for textures.

This portrait has been very well done and your model (if you used one) is an attractive youth. In his narrow chin and long face I detect some influence of the great fantasy master, Yuni. Will you consider doing one where the hair is longer and straighter? WWL

Yuni is NOT great fantasy master! Fyra is, (s)he creates a fantasy setting that is actually believable and Yuni is just cobbling together fetishes.

Thank you As Hubert is a set character and his hair is what it is, I wouldn't want to change him too much. Also he might then look too much like his brother. On the other hand, Jack might grow his hair longer at some point (he's changed his hairstyles a number of times).

Nor should you change Hubert just to please me, of course! But this version of the older brother looks younger than in your double portrait of the brothers posing in front of the "Gypsy" wagon. In that double portrait Hubert looks more rugged, more assured. My own characters, the brothers Valery and Sergei, look somewhat alike, possibly TOO much alike. You are a MUCH better artist than me so you can really do justice to the individuality of your characters. Of course, after my cataracts are corrected, I can see even more interesting details in your artwork. Thanks. WWL

Whoa! Never seen such a cutie in 3D before! He's like the Cheshire Cat as a boy, such a cute face but also completely unreal, the face that real humans would never have, I really love how you incorporated the feline features into a human face AND it actually beautified him a lot, rather than making him a monster! So far I've only seen something similar in the elves, like you know, they make them pretty and long-haired, so they look even more attractive than humans, but I've never realized there was a second way to "improve" the human face andΒ now I'm really curious about these cat-people, they make such a pretty race AND they look very different from elves.

And his hair style suits him so well! Too bad there was only one picture of Hubert

FyraNuanser In reply to Yuni [2019-03-26 22:11:52 +0000 UTC]

I'm glad the cat-ness is still recognisable in the family. The nose used to be flatter and the hare-lip (or cat-lip, rather) more pronounced, but I think he still has it in the eyes and the narrow jaw. Yes, the full feline morph to the head makes the figure look a little monstrous, so I dialled it back to make the character more human while still trying to retain the catness. Glad you like the hair as it's one of the main things that makes him stand out against his brother.

This was a render I didn't intend posting when I made it; I had a fallow period but still wanted to submit things to get feedback for inspiration (and it worked). So this is just a simple test portrait to see how the character would look. Nevertheless, Hubert seems to have built up a small following and deserves more exposure. I don't see why he shouldn't be seen along with his brother, for example. Thanks for the inspiration!

Thanks very much Yuni I love this wagon (we call those caravans in the UK, and this kind is often called a "gypsy caravan") and I think they probably did come from travelling circus and fair folk. Jack is an entertainer himself so I think it suits him very well.

Their outfits and toned bodies made me think they might enjoy doing this kind of hand-balancing as a duo:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=HoBKtj…

I'd of course vote for making Jack flexible, his body makes me drool thinking of the things he could do But knowing that you may not be a fan of contortionism, I thought hand-balancing is better since it's a very sexy act to show their muscled bodies AND at the same time there's still some room for flexibility, should Jack want to try it

Great video! The Russians are so good at this sort of thing, and they do it with great seriousness and what you might even call innocence. It's a cultural thing, and don't think we from further west can quite get away with it!

I have actually experimented with contortion rendersβ€”it's really hard to do them convincingly due to the limitations of the 3D models. It's a tantalizing idea though, to see exactly how entertaining Jack can be!

Yuni In reply to FyraNuanser [2019-04-13 01:02:02 +0000 UTC]

I've seen a lot of great performers from different parts of the world being great balancers but I chose this particular video because of its cleanness and quality as I didn't want to bore you with some blurry and overly long video, just wanted to give a good example what kind of entertainment Jack and Hubert could probably do if they wanted to

Well, I guess while working with 3D models so much, one has to think of contortionist poses at least once. There are 3D artists on DA who specialize in contortion renders, and very convincing and realistic ones, so perhaps they could offer some help.

Meanwhile I did try to imagine Jack and Hubert being contortionists:

Sorry in advance for Jack's pose being so over the top (even if he's on the bottom), I just have some kind of obsession with making cute boys unbelievably flexible XD (I just realized that after all these years)
But at least Hubert, I think, looks like something he could actually do

So I couldn't just stand by and not reciprocate! Yes, Hubert can manage that, but Jack, being a bard, a fool and a jongleur has had more advanced training.

OMG!! How did you.... whoa!! I'm so speechless now XD Amazing work!! They look even better in 3D! And you said you couldn't do it! I was a bit down today but this just made my day!

Of course I'll submit it, I just wanted to get your reaction first as I didn't know if you'd like this idea but I'm very glad you enjoyed it so much! Β  Whoa, didn't know those nuances of Jack's biography. There's nothing better in the world than a fool who is also super limber, that only makes him even more crazy AND makes him the cutest thing in the world! I've always had a weakness for them bendy jesters, entertaining the crowd and making the difficult and impossible things look silly and easy At some point I really wanted to draw the tarot cards just because of the Fool XD

Anyway, they just look too good for this world..haha! I'm so glad I "helped" you make a contortion render for your gallery, not many people like contortionists sadly but I hope some of your viewers will also enjoy this!

FyraNuanser In reply to Yuni [2019-04-16 00:15:31 +0000 UTC]

My viewers definitely seem to be enjoying it, and of course I've gained a few new onesβ€”although I we have some overlap. I've just put it to some of my regular groups, so we shall seeβ€”although it's done very well without them, which makes me very happy. I've always had liking for fools and jesters, going back to when I was studying Shakespeare at school, and I like bard characters in RPG (although it takes a lot of development to make them really useful).

I will have to rummage through the wardrobe to see what will suit Hubert. I'd also like to see Jack in his Fool's outfit, but I'm pretty sure I don't have anything and the store bought stuff for jesters is pretty horrible so I would probably have to heavily customize and make some elements myself. Something sexy along the lines of your Loki or Helljester (although any ideas would be welcome).

Yuni In reply to FyraNuanser [2019-04-17 16:08:41 +0000 UTC]

Okay, I'm really glad it didn't cause much trouble. As an artist who's been drawing contortionists for over a decade, I've seen all kinds of reactions, some people not even thinking it's fun to look at. Of course I'm not saying everybody should be contorting 24/7, but I think acrobatics is a really great specialty and it's always cool to look at jesters who are really limber and stuff like that

Yeah, ever since the times of some old RPG-rules like AD&D, I was always very curious about the classes like bards or jugglers, imagining them as very agile and limber boys. Then I figured out that most people imagine bards and jugglers being a female-only class, that was a bit frustrating because I always imagined it as a very boyish class, just the opposite of brutes. All the medieval boys wearing tight leggings immediately come to mind... And back then, you could imagine a girl having a style like that, all girls wore long dresses. I have no idea whose idea was that to steal the boyish medieval style and make it a female style... But in every game, if you get an agile juggler of sorts, or a bard, or a thief/rogue character, it's ALWAYS a female! My Loki and Helljester were just the way I imagine it HAS to be, honestly. When you look at any medieval paintings and various illustrations for the medieval fairytales, all those beauties in skintight leggings are boys, not a single one of them is a girl.

As for Jack's outfit, I personally think the assassin outfit was amazing. I'm a huge fan of that kind of outfits that don't cover most of the body, just the shoulders, forearms, ankles, possibly a hat/helmet and as minimal piece for the crotch as you can find... Of course it's a non-practical outfit, but it's just the best for entertainment Jack looks sexy in it and it seems like he's used to that type of minimal outfits, but of course I'm a big fan of the idea of seeing him explore more outfits as long as they don't cover him too much XD

Yes, it seem to have been very well received. I got one decline from a group, but the rest snapped it up It's doing very well, one of the best since the Beastmaster.

I think it's fair to say that rarely overdress my charactersβ€”it would be a crime to cover up all that beautiful skin and musculature that the 3D model artists put so much work into! Yes, it's often impractical to the point of silliness, but it's called fantasy for a reason

I've always thought of bard class as being boys and men (which of course, as you say, is historically correct), and boys played all the female roles in theatre back in those days, too. Even when I was a kid I liked the drawings and paintings of men and boys wearing doublet and hose I was obsessed with the Narnia books, and I remember that's how the great illustrator Pauline Baynes depicted Prince Caspian, and Prince Rilian in the Silver Chair.

Yuni In reply to FyraNuanser [2019-04-21 13:53:20 +0000 UTC]

Sadly I missed both the Narnia books AND the movie, but I like the classical paintings and sculptures and I always found those medieval pageboys in leggings so attractive in all the paintings! Not to mention they're usually long haired and cute by definition, otherwise they wouldn't get the job, I guess

That's what basically got me into the medieval times, all the stories of princes, pages, knights, squires and of course jesters! You can read any story, like the one of Robin Hood or anything else, and already feel them all walking around in sexy leggings and some even in hoodies!

About a year ago I also read R.L. Stevenson's "Black Arrow", the book that stood on my shelf since I was a child and I never got to read it, but finally did and enjoyed it a lot! The story of a brave midteen boy having to run from both knights and bandits to save his androgynous little friend XD I really love those pre-20th century books, completely untouched by technology, and in the 19th century they kept publishing those adventure books nonstop all over Europe: Stevenson, Verne, Dumas, Feval, and probably many others I haven't read yet.. I specially like how back then they weren't shy to describe the male beauty and cuteness, always depicting their teenage male protagonists as some sort of living angels XD

I had the Black Arrow in a set of similar books when I was a boy and never ended up reading it. I'm going to download that onto my Kindle now! Hooray, it's free! I read the Howard Pyle's 1883 Merry Adventures of Robin Hood a year or two ago and really enjoyed it. I like that older style of language and the uncomplicated adventure. It's also getting hard to find fantasy books of this type now that don't have a female protagonist.

Yuni In reply to FyraNuanser [2019-04-22 15:43:07 +0000 UTC]

Oh, you're the first person I talked to who even knows about Black Arrow. And you're right about female protagonists... and when there's a male one in modern books, he's never charming. Something broke in the 20th century. Somehow a lot of adventure books in the late 19th century contained really admirable young men for protagonists and the authors were never shy to describe how pretty they are because it was one of their strengths, but today male beauty is treated like a weakness, that's why it's very difficult to read modern books and they feel like betraying reality or putting a dark veil over it.

And there's even no need to read modern books because the old ones have a lot richer plots anyway, I guess the reading audience was a lot more intelligent back then. And i'm not saying this as an oldfag, I literally discovered most of that stuff in the recent years, I keep getting amazed that the old stuff is always so much higher in quality than all the modern "HD" stuff...

I also really want to try more of Jules Verne because I've only read the Mysterious Island. Probably need to consult my good French friend about it. And if you know of any good ol' English books, please let me know!

I'm at about 60% through Black Arrow now, and I see John's secret has been exposed! However I am still sceptical, especially as Dick had confessed hsi lack of interest in women. I think John is a boy pretending to be a girl dressed as a boy. Prove me wrong!

The only book I can think of right now is The Worm Ouroburos, written in the 20s by a British civil servant, E R Eddison. It's quite hard going as it's all written in pseudo-Jacobean English (not unlike the Bible) but I love it. I created an ebook of it if you have a Kindle (it's out of copyright), and I'll gladly give you a copy.

Great! So you've read the most interesting parts already! The rest I think is mostly battles.Β I think I'd also vote for the idea that John IS a boy under all the covers It's nice to have a book like that at all, in comparison to 99.999% of all the books that never ever do anything like that.

Sorry I have a pile of books to finish at the moment, I started reading the Witcher books, then I also wanted to try some Jules Verne later, but I found the Ouroboros book and downloaded it! I don't have a Kindle, just an app on my phone but now it's there and I can read it any time! I'll get through them little by little, but thanks for suggesting it to me!

FyraNuanser In reply to Yuni [2019-05-04 00:12:02 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome I think it may take a very special kind of person to enjoy Ouroboros in this day and age and I hope you may be such a person! Apparently both Tolkien and C S Lewis were inspired by it. I would just say that you can skim the first chapter or so that takes place on Earth. This is what in literature they call the "framing story" and is quite clunky. The man Lessingham is taken to the world and guided by a "martlet" (a bird that we now know as a house martin) but they take no role in the action are very quickly forgotten. Other quirks are that the world is apparently Mercury, which is physically impossible, and that the various nations or races are given names like Witches, Demons, Goblins, Pixies and Ghouls, but they are all human. Once you understand that you can get on with the story, which is brilliant.

Thanks I'd really wanted to use this hair, but I'd had some technical difficulties with it in terms of realism. I had to do a lot of custom work to make it satisfactory, but I think without it this character wouldn't have come into being. The "Cat" family are by nature daring, but I think Hubert is rather more sensible than his younger brother! Jack started out as a simple portrait and developed into a (sometimes rather silly and vain) character, so I'd like to think that Hubert will do the same (a character, that is; hopefully not a silly and vain one!)

I think you're right. I think one's creations somehow take on a life of their own (of course it isn't their own, it's just that they take root in one's subconscious and grow there). That's especially true for writers and, although there is much less scope for visual artists as we aren't explicitly writing stories, I think the principle is the same.

Chanteur-de-Vent In reply to FyraNuanser [2017-07-31 15:46:27 +0000 UTC]

I think the difference between artists with OC's and writers is only the amount of time you write it out. Visual artists tend to let the character go around undescribed, but imaged, while the writer puts down every detail in the words, so he has to stick to it. But for the rest - the characters still roam the head of the creator, claiming things they like.
